Job description

Job Summary

Miller’s Tug and Barge is seeking an experienced Port Engineer to oversee the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of our fleet. This position ensures compliance with regulatory standards, manages preventive maintenance programs, and collaborates with vessel crews, management, and external vendors to maximize fleet efficiency and reliability.

The Port Engineer will play a key role in planning and executing maintenance projects, supervising emergency repairs, and optimizing operational costs while upholding the highest safety and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fleet Maintenance & Repairs
    • Develop, implement, and oversee preventative maintenance programs for vessels.
    • Conduct inspections to ensure vessel safety, operational efficiency, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
    • Plan, manage, and oversee dry-docking and major shipyard repairs, including budgeting, scheduling, and execution.
    • Troubleshoot and assist with vessel mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic system issues.
    • Coordinate emergency repairs and casualty response efforts for the fleet.
    • Work closely with vessel crews to maintain and document daily operational and maintenance records.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Documentation
    • Ensure vessels comply with USCG, ABS, OSHA, and EPA, requirements.
    • Maintain all necessary documentation for vessel certifications, inspections, and audits.
    • Assist in regulatory inspections and audits, ensuring corrective actions are completed as required.
    • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and company policies.
  • Budgeting & Cost Management
    • Develop and manage maintenance and repair budgets, ensuring cost-effective solutions.
    • Oversee procurement of spare parts, inventory control, and vendor negotiations.
    • Analyze maintenance trends and implement cost-saving initiatives.
  • Crew Training & Support
    • Provide technical guidance and training to vessel engineers and crew on maintenance procedures, repairs, and safety protocols.
    • Assist in hiring, evaluating, and mentoring engineering staff.
    • Conduct safety training and promote a culture of operational excellence.
  • Operational Support
    • Respond to vessel-related issues 24/7 as needed.
    • Support fleet operations by ensuring vessels are maintained and available for deployment.
    • Work closely with operations and marine personnel to optimize fleet performance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in vessel maintenance and repair, preferably on tugs, OSVs, Crew Boats or barges.
  • USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (DDE Unlimited or higher preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of Subchapters I, L, M, T, dry docking, shipyard operations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience managing budgets, cost analysis, and procurement.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, maintenance tracking software (e.g., Helm, or AutoCad).
  • Valid TWIC card or ability to obtain one.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physically capable of boarding vessels, climbing ladders, and working in marine environments.

Work Environment & Conditions

  • Work will be performed in an office, shipyard, and onboard vessels.
  • Must be able to travel and work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and emergency call-outs.
  • Exposure to marine environments, including extreme weather conditions, confined spaces, and mechanical hazards.
