How much do friction material design engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for friction material design engineer in the United States is $100,738.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $80,000.00 and $116,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Friction Material Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Friction Material Design Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, mechanical engineering, and tribology, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, finite element analysis (FEA), and experience with material testing equipment are commonly required, along with knowledge of industry standards. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable, high-performance friction materials that meet safety, regulatory, and customer requirements in industries like automotive or aerospace.

What are some common challenges a Friction Material Design Engineer faces when developing new brake materials?

Friction Material Design Engineers often encounter the challenge of balancing performance requirements with regulatory standards and cost constraints. Developing brake materials involves rigorous testing to ensure optimal friction, wear resistance, and thermal stability, all while minimizing noise and environmental impact. Additionally, engineers must collaborate closely with manufacturing teams to ensure the material can be produced efficiently at scale, and with quality assurance teams to meet safety certifications. This role requires adaptability and problem-solving skills to address evolving industry standards and customer expectations.

What does a Friction Material Design Engineer do?

A Friction Material Design Engineer specializes in developing and optimizing materials used for friction-based components such as brake pads, clutches, and other systems that require controlled friction. They work on selecting and formulating materials to achieve desired properties like durability, performance, and safety while considering environmental and cost constraints. These engineers collaborate with product designers, testing teams, and manufacturers to ensure that friction materials meet regulatory standards and function effectively across various applications. Their work is crucial in automotive, aerospace, and industrial sectors where precise control of friction is essential.

What is the difference between Friction Material Design Engineer vs Brake Systems Engineer?

AspectFriction Material Design EngineerBrake Systems Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, materials science or mechanical engineering, certifications in materials testingEngineering degree, mechanical or automotive engineering, certifications in systems design
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D departmentsAutomotive or aerospace companies, testing facilities, design offices
Industry UsageAutomotive, heavy machinery, aerospaceAutomotive, aerospace, transportation

Friction Material Design Engineers focus on developing and testing friction materials used in braking systems, while Brake Systems Engineers design and integrate entire brake systems. Both roles require engineering expertise and often overlap in automotive industries, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and specialization.
