This role will focus on optimizing welding processes, improving equipment reliability, supporting production uptime, and driving continuous improvement across resistance, projection, and GMAW welding systems.

The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on welding engineering experience in an automotive environment, along with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally with maintenance, engineering, quality, and production teams in a lean manufacturing setting.

Responsibilities

  • Support and optimize welding processes across resistance spot welding, projection nut welding, and GMAW systems
  • Implement process improvements using current welding technologies to improve quality, efficiency, and stability
  • Ensure welding systems operate within defined specifications and interpret technical requirements for manufacturability
  • Partner with maintenance teams to develop preventive maintenance plans and improve equipment uptime
  • Train and mentor maintenance technicians on welding systems, troubleshooting, and equipment repair best practices
  • Monitor, analyze, and report downtime issues; develop and implement both short-term corrective actions and long-term preventive solutions
  • Support and lead engineering changes related to welding and assembly processes, including in-house project execution
  • Collaborate with external vendors regarding system troubleshooting, software updates, and hardware improvements
  • Support layered process audits and participate in internal audit processes as required (ISO 9001 / IATF 16949 / VDA 6.3 / customer audits)
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and customer requirements in all welding operations
  • Work cross-functionally with engineering, production, and quality teams to support continuous improvement initiatives
  • Perform other duties as needed to support manufacturing operations and production goals

Qualifications

  • Strong working knowledge of resistance spot welding, projection nut welding, and GMAW processes, including applications with mild steel, high-strength steel, and coated materials
  • Experience working with robotic welding systems (Fanuc and/or Motoman preferred)
  • Familiarity with servo weld gun technology and welding control systems (Bosch DC mid-frequency inverter experience)
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a production environment
  • Experience supporting lean manufacturing environments and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Exposure or working knowledge of quality systems and standards including ISO 9001, IATF 16949, and VDA 6.3
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to train, coach, and influence cross-functional teams
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing setting
  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or related technical field + 3+ years of welding/robotic manufacturing experience, or Associate degree + 5+ years of experience, or 7+ years of equivalent hands-on welding/robotic manufacturing experience
