As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for freight driver pay in the United States is $37.80, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $41.35 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What factors typically influence the pay structure for freight drivers?

Freight driver pay is often determined by a combination of factors such as mileage driven, type of freight hauled, experience level, and the employer’s pay model (e.g., per mile, hourly, or salary). Long-haul drivers may earn more due to longer routes and time away from home, while local or regional drivers might have steadier schedules but slightly lower rates. Bonuses for safety, on-time delivery, and endorsements (like hazardous materials) can also impact overall compensation. It's important to review the company's pay policies, overtime opportunities, and potential for advancement when evaluating a position.

What trucking company in Texas is paying $14000 a week?

Freight drivers can earn up to $14,000 a week in some high-paying trucking companies, especially those with specialized skills such as flatbed or hazardous materials hauling. These roles often require extensive experience, a clean driving record, and sometimes additional certifications. Such high earnings are typically associated with owner-operator positions or long-haul routes with high freight volume.

Does Walmart offer $110,000 salary to new drivers?

Walmart does not typically offer new freight drivers a $110,000 salary. Entry-level truck drivers usually earn lower starting wages, with salaries increasing with experience, mileage, and additional certifications such as a commercial driver's license (CDL). High earnings are generally associated with experienced drivers or those working long-haul routes.

Can a truck driver make $200,000 a year?

Freight drivers can potentially earn $200,000 annually, especially those with extensive experience, specialized skills, or who work long hours and overtime. High-paying opportunities are more common in specialized freight, owner-operator roles, or long-haul trucking, but such earnings are not typical for all drivers and often require significant effort and experience.

Why do most people quit trucking?

Many truck drivers quit trucking due to long hours, time away from family, and challenging working conditions. Job dissatisfaction often stems from low pay relative to workload, lack of work-life balance, and the physical and mental demands of the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freight Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freight Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), strong knowledge of road safety regulations, and experience with freight handling. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and basic vehicle maintenance tools is typically required. Excellent time management, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help drivers excel in coordinating deliveries and addressing unexpected issues. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure cargo is delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with legal requirements.

How much do freight drivers get paid?

Freight driver pay varies depending on factors like experience, region, type of freight, and company. On average, freight drivers in the U.S. earn between $45,000 and $70,000 annually, with long-haul drivers and those transporting hazardous materials often earning more.
