Job Summary:

Responsible for leading, directing, and providing overall support of the organization’s Human Resources initiatives. This position will provide HR Management support for Zeeland Freight Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides support and guidance to employees and management in the resolution of employee relations issues.
  • Manages the talent acquisition process, which includes employee recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of qualified CDL drivers, Mechanics, and other freight personnel.
  • Ensures planning, monitoring, and appraisal of employee performance appraisal program by training managers on employee assessment and development methods and ensure reviews are completed timely.
  • Maintains knowledge of benefit programs to inform and answer employee questions as needed.
  • Analyzes local trends in compensation and pay practices to ensure the organization attracts and retains top talent. Conducts periodic compensation study; monitoring and scheduling individual pay actions; and recommending, planning, and implementing pay structure revisions.
  • Creates learning and development programs and initiatives that provide internal and external training opportunities for all employees.
  • Enforce Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and OSHA rules, including drug testing, background checks, and hours-of-service compliance
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Retains accurate current and historical human resource records according to company, local, and federal policy.
  • Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures, instruction, and all safety requirements.
  • Provides a “Customer Service” attitude when interacting with internal and external customers while accomplishing work, production, and achieving quality standards.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe workstation/environment at all times.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor’s in human resources, or a 4-year degree in related discipline, preferred.
  • Experience: 1-3 years in progressively responsible human resource roles, preferred.
  • Deep understanding of employment laws (FMLA, ADA, EEO) and transport-specific labor regulations.
  • Transportation and DOT industry experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of employment law, regulations, transportation specific labor regulations, DOT regulations and HR best practices
  • Knowledge of HR systems and databases such as ADP
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem resolution skills, along with customer service and team orientation skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with employees at all levels.
  • Ability to advise and influence business leaders on how human resource actions can impact business performance.
  • Ability to work through complex business issues and identify required HR interventions.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with integrity and discretion.
  • Abide by all relevant SOPs as per Company policy as they are related to the position covered by this Job Description.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel.
  • Ability to use stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to carry out tasks in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple tasks at once.

  • Occasionally lift and/or move 20 pounds or more.  
  • Operate in an office and production environment. Production environment could include frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme heat or cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the production environment is usually very loud.
