Job description

Teach private swim classes for infants, children, teens and adults using the JCCSF Swim School curriculum. All JCCSF Aquatics staff are expected to have outstanding customer service skills and be committed to Aquatics safety standards.
Private lessons take place on Friday afternoons. Additional hours are available for those interested in teaching group lessons as well; group lessons are offered seven days per week – multiple shifts available.
All JCCSF Swim Instructors must complete 4 in-person training courses (12 hours minimum) at a training rate of $23.50. Upon successful completion of the Swim Instructor Trainings, the hourly rate increases to $26.20.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Teach classes according to the JCCSF Swim School curriculum.
  • Create a warm, friendly and safe environment for all classes.
  • Check in with the deck coordinator 15 minutes after the start of the first class.
  • Be in assigned teaching station 5 minutes after every class ready to teach.
  • Ensure the teaching station is appropriately stocked for class.
  • Wear the JCCSF swim instructor uniform at all times while teaching.
  • Greet all students as they arrive for class.
  • Evaluate students’ progress for every class.
  • Maintain direct and clear communication with the Program Coordinator about students’ progress.
  • Assist Program Coordinator with pool setups.
  • Render first aid and CPR within the scope of employee certifications.
  • Attend all mandatory training or staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Understand and honor JCCSF mission, core values and customer service standards inside and outside the Aquatics Center.
  • Learn and follow safety and emergency preparedness procedures for the JCCSF Aquatics Department. 
  • Perform additional duties as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience working with children, preferably in an education, recreation, or athletics setting
  • Comfort in pools and strong swimming experience
  • Prior experience teaching swim lessons helpful but not required
  • Ability to swim 3 of the 4 competitive strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle) at an intermediate level.
    • Applicants ability is evaluated during the interview process.
  • Good communication skills
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • In water of varying depth and temperature in an indoor aquatics center. Morning, afternoon and weekend shifts are available.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to spend prolonged amounts of time in water and swim 3 of the 4 competitive strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle) at an intermediate level.
STATUS
  • Non-benefited, non-exempt position
HOURS
  • 5 hours per week on Friday afternoons (required); additional hours available, up to 19 hours total per week.
SCHEDULE
  • Private lesson schedule: Fridays 1:30pm – 6:35pm
  • Aquatics Center open 7 days per week; a variety of shifts are available for training and group lessons.
