What is a freelancer?

Freelancers are self-employed professionals who offer their skills and services to clients on a project or contract basis, rather than working as full-time employees for a single company. They have the flexibility to choose their clients, set their own schedules, and often work remotely. Freelancers can work in a variety of fields such as writing, graphic design, programming, marketing, and more. They are responsible for managing their own business operations, including invoicing, taxes, and finding new clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelancer?

To thrive as a Freelancer, you need strong expertise in your chosen field, self-motivation, and the ability to manage multiple projects independently, often supported by a relevant portfolio or proven track record. Familiarity with digital collaboration tools, invoicing software, and freelance platforms is typically necessary to streamline work and manage clients. Excellent communication, time management, and adaptability are standout soft skills for building client relationships and handling diverse assignments. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering high-quality work, maintaining client satisfaction, and sustaining a successful freelance business.

What are some common challenges freelancers face when managing multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelancers often juggle several projects for different clients at once, which can present challenges in time management, setting boundaries, and prioritizing tasks. Balancing deadlines, responding promptly to client communications, and ensuring consistent quality across all projects requires strong organizational skills. Many freelancers find it helpful to use project management tools and clear contracts to set expectations and avoid scope creep. Establishing a routine and regularly reviewing workloads can also help maintain a healthy work-life balance.

What is the difference between Freelancer vs Contract Worker?

AspectFreelancerContract Worker
CredentialsVaries; often self-taught or with specific certificationsOften requires specific certifications or credentials depending on the industry
Work EnvironmentRemote or independent; flexible hoursUsually on-site or remote; fixed-term employment
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across creative, tech, writing, design fieldsCommon in corporate, manufacturing, or specialized industries
Search & Comparison IntentHigh; often compared for freelance opportunitiesModerate; less frequently compared directly with freelancers

Freelancers are independent professionals working on a project basis, often remotely and with flexible hours. Contract workers are hired for specific periods or projects, sometimes on-site, and may require industry-specific credentials. While both roles involve temporary work, freelancers typically have more independence, whereas contract workers are more integrated into the employer's organization during their contract.

How do freelancers get jobs?

Freelancers get jobs by creating profiles on online platforms, showcasing their skills and portfolios to attract clients. They often bid on projects, network through social media, and build a reputation through reviews and consistent quality work to secure new opportunities.

At the moment, the most common assignment that writers as part of this freelance network can expect is writing SEO-optimized blog posts (800-1000 words). However, freelance writers may work on a range of projects, including, but not limited to: blog posts, webpages, emails, infographics, e-books, white papers, and more.

Writing assignments vary on topic and industry, so applicants must be comfortable adapting to fit the assignment’s needs and specifications. Applicants with expertise writing for the B2B, technology, associations, e-commerce, and/or education industries are preferred.

As part of the freelance writer network, the number of assignments per month may vary based on needs. We’re looking for writers who can be flexible and adaptable.

Please note that our content creation standards prohibits the use of any AI content generation tools in the writing process.

Applicants will be required to send a portfolio link or writing samples for review. Please ensure your portfolio and/or samples showcase professional experience.

What You'll Do

  • Communicate your bandwidth clearly in advance

What You Need

  • A W-9 or W8-BEN to put on file
  • A PayPal account for submitting invoices and receiving payment
  • Excellent writing skills with incredible attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Prior content marketing creation experience a plus, specifically with agencies
  • SEO knowledge a plus
  • Familiarity with project management platforms (like Basecamp and Asana) a plus
Employment Type: FULL_TIME
