As of Jul 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for freelancer automotive in the United States is $34.86, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $28.85 and $40.87 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How do freelance automotive professionals typically find consistent work and build client relationships?

Freelance automotive professionals often secure projects through a combination of online platforms, industry networking, and local partnerships with dealerships or repair shops. Building a reputation for reliability and quality work is crucial, so professionals frequently maintain strong communication with clients and seek referrals. Consistency in workflow may require diversifying services—such as diagnostics, repairs, or consulting—and staying current with automotive technology trends. Over time, positive client interactions and successful project outcomes help establish long-term relationships and a steady stream of opportunities.

What is a Freelancer Automotive?

A Freelancer Automotive is a self-employed professional who offers specialized services within the automotive industry, such as car repair, diagnostics, consulting, design, or writing. Unlike permanent employees, freelancers work on a project or contract basis for various clients, which can include repair shops, dealerships, manufacturers, or individual car owners. This role allows for flexibility, diverse work experiences, and the ability to set one's own rates and schedule. However, freelancers are responsible for their own business operations, including finding clients, managing finances, and maintaining up-to-date skills.

What is the difference between Freelancer Automotive vs Automotive Technician?

Both roles require automotive knowledge, but credentials and work settings differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelancer in the Automotive industry, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelancer in the Automotive industry, you need expertise in automotive repair or design, a relevant technical diploma or certification, and hands-on experience with vehicles. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, CAD software, and vehicle-specific systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, client communication, and time management skills distinguish successful freelancers. These competencies ensure the delivery of high-quality services, client satisfaction, and the ability to manage multiple projects independently.

Is this for you? Are you ready to break free from the 8-5, same old thing, top-down world of Service Department management? Are you ready to take all your knowledge, experience, wisdom and start earning more with it? Have you built multiple teams and departments that kill it on Customer Experience and profitability, but you don't really see where your next level up is going to come from?
Are you not only skilled, but talented? Are you hungry? Driven? Can you command a room, articulate your thoughts, and lead others? Are you a true expert that has seen it all, have you faced adversity, dealt with it, and still achieved great things?
If so, this is it. This is your shot!
This is your shot to earn more, find purpose, command respect, and unlock a much brighter future for people who are just like you were a few years back. If you honestly feel like you were meant for more, this is finally your chance to PROVE IT!
We're Chris Collins Inc., the force behind the Service Drive Revolution, and we're looking for truly elite service professionals to join our team of traveling Service Department Performance Coaches.

As a Service Department Performance Coach, you will partner with Owners, General Managers, Service Directors, and front-line staff to revolutionize their systems and business in the automotive industry.
As a Service Department Performance Coach, you will:
  • Audit operations, identify profit leaks, and solve costly problems
  • Equip and train advisors in real-world, high-level selling strategies
  • Coach managers in the art & science of leadership and accountability
  • Teach individuals and teams to transform not just numbers-but culture
  • Teach KPI comprehension and mastery
  • You will be on-site with dealerships across the U.S. and Canada, delivering hands-on Performance Coaching and tactical implementation of systems.
  • This is NOT just consulting from a PowerPoint-it is "in-the-trenches" transformation.
  • Note: There is a component of coaching that is a virtual coaching

Candidate non-negotiable requirements you must have:
  • 5+ years as a top-performing Service Manager or Fixed Ops Director in Commercial Truck and/or Car.
  • Proven/documented results in CSI, profitability, and team development
  • Passion for teaching others what you've mastered
This Role Is Not for Everyone! Before you apply, you must understand this:
    • You will travel- up to 3 weeks per month.
    • You must thrive in unfamiliar environments
    • You must be a self-starter who can command a room, earn trust, and drive change fast
    • You must bring real-world, documented service management success to the table
    • No prior coaching experience needed-just a very strong track record and a willingness to learn, grow, and coach
    • Excellent communication skills and comfort with leading training and working with all personality types
    • A flexible schedule and hunger for travel and making a true impact

Why Us? Why join our team:
We're not just building better service departments-we're building a movement. We are building a Special Forces team of Service Department Performance Coaches. We are building the most effective, dynamic, respected, and well compensated team possible! That is our goal. That is our mission.
