What type of freelance writing is most in demand?

Writers with skills in SEO, digital marketing, and familiarity with content management systems are particularly sought after. How do freelance writers typically manage client communications and deadlines when working with multiple projects at once?

Freelance writers often juggle assignments from various clients, making strong organizational and communication skills essential. Most writers use digital tools like project management apps, shared calendars, and clear email correspondence to track deadlines and deliverables. Freelance writing involves independently creating content for various clients on a project basis, offering flexibility and diverse assignments. Content writing often refers to producing material specifically for marketing, blogs, or websites within a company's ongoing content strategy. While both roles require strong writing skills, freelance writers typically work independently, whereas content writers may be employed or contracted by organizations to produce consistent content.

These platforms typically require profiles, skill samples, and sometimes certifications, and they offer various payment structures such as per word, per project, or hourly rates.

Is freelance writing still in demand?

What is freelance writing?

Freelance writing is a type of self-employment where individuals write content for clients or publications on a project-by-project basis, rather than as a full-time employee. Freelance writers may create articles, blog posts, marketing copy, technical documents, or other types of written material. They often work remotely, set their own schedules, and may write for multiple clients simultaneously. Success in freelance writing typically involves strong writing skills, the ability to meet deadlines, and effective client communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance writer?

To thrive as a Freelance Writer, you need excellent writing, grammar, and research skills, often supported by a portfolio of published work or relevant education. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, SEO tools, and platforms such as Grammarly is typically required. Strong time management, adaptability, and client communication skills help writers stand out in managing multiple projects and meeting diverse client needs. These competencies are crucial for producing high-quality, on-deadline content and building a sustainable freelance career.

Job description

Associate Editor, Avenue

RedPoint Media is seeking an Associate Editor for a full-time position based in Calgary. This position will start immediately. RedPoint Media has a hybrid office setup offering employees the opportunity to work from home or from the co-working space at CSpace Marda Loop. Regular in-person meetings, as well as event attendance, will be necessary. Salary will be commensurate with experience. This is the perfect role for an early-career editor looking to grow their skills and work collaboratively as part of a highly creative team.

our company

RedPoint Media Group Inc. is an award-winning publishing house and content-driven marketing studio in Calgary. You’ll be joining the team that creates our in-house brand, Avenue, an award-winning city lifestyle magazine. Our company also creates custom publications for clients, including the Calgary Foundation and the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

RedPoint’s mission is to create connected communities for all through trusted storytelling, and as a RedPoint employee, you’ll play a vital role in celebrating the city and its people.

our opportunity

The Associate Editor is a member of the Avenue team who will contribute to the editorial decision-making process, provide organizational and editorial support for the Editor in Chief and mentor interns. The Avenue team is small but mighty and does a lot with a little. The position involves idea generation, assigning, editing and writing, and fact-checking across all topic areas of the magazine and its brand extensions, including, but not limited to, events, digital and new products.

As Associate Editor, on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis, you will:

  • participate in idea sessions and brainstorming on all aspects of the brand and its development, including pitching new story ideas, regular departments and brand extensions
  • assign stories and work directly with both staff and freelance writers on rewrites and on editing stories as assigned
  • own regular departments in the magazine, including writing, editing and assigning as needed.
  • maintain records of contracts and invoicing for accounting on the stories you are responsible for
  • source photos and images for the art department as needed
  • liaise with the sales team to provide editorial sales notes and business mentions as needed
  • research and write as assigned for both print and digital
  • proofread print editions
  • act in the Editor in Chief’s place when they are unavailable
  • represent Avenue and RedPoint Media at industry and community events
  • attend editorial meetings
  • other editorial duties as assigned

In this role, you are expected to:

  • be a team player and work closely and collaboratively with team members to create the best product possible
  • represent RedPoint and its company values of meaningful connection, trustworthiness, accountability, curiosity and optimism through your work and interactions
  • complete your work on time to the best of your abilities within the time available
  • do your work in a timely manner and communicate delays to affected team members
  • proactively suggest changes to processes and procedures to help create efficiencies and improvements
  • create high-quality, engaging stories and events that meet the quality expectations of RedPoint’s brands
  • bring to the immediate attention of the Editor in Chief any time that your workload is too high for any reason, in order for a contingency plan to be created together.

our ideal candidate

As Associate Editor for Avenue, you are passionate about the communities, people, cultures and lifestyles that define this city; endlessly curious and optimistic, love looking at concepts, trends and ideas from new and unexpected angles; and love working collaboratively in a team and across teams to pull the skills and energy of many departments and writers together to produce a great product — every time. Our team does a lot with a little and you are excited to be part of that energy.

Our ideal Associate Editor will have

  • the ability to write and edit effectively (experience as a lifestyle writer and editor is an asset)
  • experience working directly with writers to assign and edit work
  • a strong storytelling ability and editorial sense — what makes a good story?
  • familiarity working with and developing style guides
  • experience creating and publishing engaging digital content in a variety of formats
  • a degree or diploma in journalism with between two and five years of experience in the industry
  • strong and informed ideas on how to move Avenue forward and grow the reach of the Avenue brand

Experience with event planning and project management is an asset. Experience fact-checking is an asset. Experience with WordPress, InDesign or ClickUp is also an asset.

In order to fit into our team and be a strong contributor to Avenue, you are:

  • smart, professional and a lot of fun to work with
  • passionate about the quality of your work
  • interested in the direction of the city and excited about Avenue’s many topic areas including city life, profiles, arts & culture, events, dining, home decor, fashion, shopping, travel and mountain life
  • a self-starter with a reputation for doing what you say you will do and getting things done on time
  • curious about the world around you with a way of looking at concepts, trends and ideas from new and unexpected angles
  • dedicated to improving quality and concerned about the details
  • very organized, with exceptional time-management skills
  • a team player

our RedPoint package

As a creative company, RedPoint provides a stimulating, supportive work environment with a vibrant atmosphere. We offer employees a flexible work schedule and hybrid work-from-home environment, with the opportunity to work internationally for up to one month a year. Employees will have the opportunity to attend city and cultural events as a representative of Avenue. Employees are encouraged to give back to the community and the industry and to pursue their professional development.

To apply for this position, please write a cover letter that includes three story pitches for Avenue magazine and provide us with a copy or link to your C.V. that includes samples of published writing and editing work.
