Job description

T Magazine is looking for a temporary deputy photo director with experience in print and digital storytelling.
You will assign photography covering a wide array of subject matter and photographic genres including fashion, portraits, interiors, travel and still lifes. You have experience producing editorial photoshoots involving studios, set builds, hair and makeup, location scouting, casting, and wardrobe. You have strong knowledge of photographers around the world.
Additionally, you will supervise two photo editors whose primary responsibilities are in-depth photo research for print and digital, and manage budgeting, contracts, and invoicing for multiple stories.
This is an in-office position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with the Director of Photography, produce photo shoots for all sections of the magazine and website including fashion, interiors, travel and still lifes.
  • Source freelance photographers, producers, stylists, hair and makeup artists, set builders, prop designers, location scouts, casting agents, animal handlers, and fabricators for photo shoots.
  • Handle several projects simultaneously that span the areas of fashion, travel, still life, interiors, portraits, and special packages.
  • Manage photo editors working in photo research, art commissions and digital shoots.
  • Maintain budgets and contracts for photo shoots; process and approve invoices for photo shoots in a timely manner.
  • Partner with the Director of Photography to negotiate fees with vendors such as studios, photo labs and photo agencies.
  • Work with the editorial and design teams to produce multimedia features.
  • Meet with photographers, gallerists, photography agents and book publishers to find new photographers and keep up with trends in the art world.
  • Do portfolio reviews and mentoring to find new photographers.
  • Mentor junior members of the photo department.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • You will report to the Photo Director.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years producing creative photography including fashion, interiors, travel, and still lifes for print and digital.
  • Experience liaising well with top editors, writers, designers, and photo editors while producing shoots.
  • Knowledge of journalistic ethics, standards, and practices.
  • Knowledge of the top creatives working in the fields of art, photography, and video.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience recognizing, developing, and recruiting new talent.
  • Experience working across multiple platforms including photography, video, multimedia, and social media.
  • Experience managing a team and advising junior staff editors.
  • Must work well with editorial and creative teams.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed.
