How do freelance web developers typically manage client communication and project expectations?

Freelance web developers often handle all aspects of client communication themselves, from initial consultations to project delivery and support. Effective communication is crucial for understanding client goals, setting clear timelines, and managing expectations regarding deliverables and revisions. Many freelancers use project management tools, regular progress updates, and detailed contracts to ensure both parties are aligned throughout the process. This proactive approach helps prevent misunderstandings and builds strong client relationships, which are essential for repeat business and referrals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance web developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and often frameworks such as React or Vue, supported by a solid portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, content management systems (e.g., WordPress), and basic SEO or web analytics tools is typically expected. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear client communication are crucial soft skills for managing multiple projects and building client relationships. These qualities are essential for delivering high-quality work independently, meeting client expectations, and sustaining a successful freelance business.

What is a freelance web developer?

A freelance web developer is an independent professional who designs, builds, and maintains websites for clients on a project or contract basis, rather than working as a full-time employee for a single company. They often work with a range of clients, including businesses, organizations, and individuals, offering services such as website creation, updates, troubleshooting, and optimization. Freelance web developers typically manage their own schedules, find their own clients, and may specialize in areas like front-end, back-end, or full-stack development. They use a variety of programming languages and tools depending on the requirements of each project. This career offers flexibility, but also requires self-motivation and strong communication skills to manage client relationships effectively.

What does a freelance web developer do?

Freelance web developers create eye-catching and user-friendly websites to generate web traffic and promote their clients' products and services. Unlike staff web developers, freelance web developers are independent contractors who may work for an individual or business on a short- or long-term basis. As a freelance web developer, you determine your target audience based on your client's customer base and design a website to attract new customers and keep current customers interested. You may also meet with your client to ensure you understand their expectations and wants for their website. When developing a design, you may collaborate with a team to create a new site or find ways to improve an existing one. Functionality and aesthetic appeal are your two primary goals.

Job description

About the Company

Our mission is to help customers save time and money when purchasing commercial kitchen equipment and supplies by providing a customer-centric shopping experience and leveraging our industry buying power.

About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional Freelance eCommerce UX/UI & Conversion Optimization Designer with deep experience designing B2B eCommerce platforms, high-value purchase experiences, or large product catalog websites.

This role is not just focused on creating visually appealing interfaces. We are looking for a designer who specializes in conversion rate optimization (CRO) and understands how to influence customer behavior through UX, experimentation, analytics, and usability improvements.

The ideal candidate has a proven track record of improving conversion rates, reducing friction, and increasing revenue on complex eCommerce websites with thousands of SKUs and sophisticated purchasing journeys.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze customer behavior, website analytics, session recordings, and performance data to proactively identify conversion barriers and revenue opportunities.
  • Develop UX hypotheses and recommend improvements designed to increase conversion rate, revenue per visitor, average order value, and other key eCommerce KPIs.
  • Design high-quality, conversion-focused user experiences and interfaces in Figma that are clearly structured, documented, and ready for developer implementation.
  • Optimize critical eCommerce experiences, including navigation, search, category and product pages, cart, checkout, calls to action, product discovery, and other key customer journeys.
  • Partner closely with developers and the A/B testing team to turn UX hypotheses into measurable experiments.
  • Design variations for A/B and multivariate testing and iterate based on quantitative results and customer behavior.
  • Use tools such as Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity, Hotjar, or similar platforms to understand customer behavior and support design decisions with data.
  • Evaluate experiment results and translate findings into actionable recommendations for future optimization.
  • Ensure the website maintains a professional, polished, corporate, and trustworthy experience that builds customer confidence throughout the purchasing journey.
  • Maintain consistency across design systems, components, layouts, and interaction patterns while continuously identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Work independently to identify and prioritize high-impact opportunities rather than relying solely on assigned design requests.
  • Stay current on eCommerce UX, conversion optimization, experimentation, and usability best practices and apply relevant insights to RestaurantSupply.com.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional UX/UI or Product Design experience, with significant experience designing for high-traffic eCommerce websites.
  • Demonstrated success designing UX/UI improvements that produced measurable increases in conversion rate, revenue, revenue per visitor, average order value, or other commercial KPIs.
  • A strong portfolio featuring eCommerce work that clearly demonstrates your personal contribution, design process, experimentation approach, and measurable business outcomes.
  • Advanced proficiency with Figma or comparable web-based design and prototyping tools.
  • Hands-on experience with conversion rate optimization (CRO), A/B testing, experimentation, and usability optimization.
  • Experience using behavioral and analytics tools such as Google Analytics/GA4, Microsoft Clarity, Hotjar, Optimizely, VWO, or similar platforms.
  • Strong understanding of eCommerce customer journeys, including product discovery, navigation, search, product detail pages, cart, checkout, and conversion funnels.
  • Ability to translate quantitative data, qualitative customer behavior, and business objectives into clear UX recommendations and design solutions.
  • Experience working closely with developers to ensure designs are technically feasible and accurately implemented.
  • Strong attention to detail with a high standard for visual quality, consistency, organization, and documentation.
  • Highly self-directed and comfortable proactively identifying opportunities, developing recommendations, and taking ownership of results.

Required Skills

  • Experience designing UX/UI for B2B eCommerce, enterprise commerce, high-ticket products, or large catalog eCommerce websites (10,000+ SKUs preferred).
  • Demonstrated success improving conversion rate or revenue through UX optimization and experimentation.
  • Experience optimizing large-scale or high-revenue eCommerce platforms.
  • Experience with B2B eCommerce or complex product catalogs.
  • Experience working with eCommerce platforms such as Shopify.
  • Experience demonstrating significant incremental revenue or conversion growth attributable to UX/CRO initiatives you personally designed.
  • Experience working in a rapid experimentation environment with frequent A/B testing and iterative releases.
