What is a freelance voice actor?

A freelance voice actor is a self-employed professional who provides voice recordings for various projects, such as commercials, audiobooks, animations, video games, and more. Unlike full-time employees at studios, freelance voice actors work on a contract or project basis for different clients. They are responsible for marketing their own services, setting their rates, and managing their schedules. Freelance voice actors often record from their own home studios and submit audio files remotely. This career offers flexibility but also requires strong business and communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance voice actor?

To thrive as a Freelance Voice Actor, you need strong vocal control, script interpretation abilities, and a portfolio showcasing your range, often supported by acting classes or workshops. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (such as Audacity or Adobe Audition), home studio equipment, and file delivery platforms is essential. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and adaptability help you work effectively with clients and meet diverse project needs. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality audio, meeting client expectations, and building a sustainable freelance career.

What are some common challenges freelance voice actors face when working with multiple clients?

Freelance voice actors often juggle several clients at once, which can present challenges such as managing tight deadlines, adapting to varying project requirements, and maintaining consistent vocal quality across different jobs. Additionally, clear communication is crucial, as expectations and feedback can differ widely from client to client. Staying organized, using reliable project management tools, and setting clear boundaries are essential strategies to ensure smooth collaborations and deliver high-quality work consistently.

How much do freelance voice actors make?

Freelance voice actors typically earn between $20 and $300 per hour, depending on experience, project complexity, and usage rights. Many also charge per project, with rates ranging from a few hundred to several thousand dollars for commercials, audiobooks, or animations. Earnings can vary widely based on skill level, reputation, and the client’s budget.

How to get into freelance voice acting?

To start as a freelance voice actor, develop a strong demo reel showcasing your vocal range and skills, and create profiles on online platforms like Voices.com or Fiverr. Building a portfolio, practicing regularly, and understanding audio editing tools can help attract clients and establish your reputation in the industry.

Job description

Yugo is a global leader in student housing dedicated to creating exceptional living experiences for students around the world. With a presence spanning more than 14 countries and 120 cities, Yugo combines innovation, community, and purpose to redefine student living. In the U.S., Yugo operates nearly 40,000 beds across 88 properties in 28 states, delivering vibrant communities designed to support student success both personally and professionally. Guided by its Live Your Best Life philosophy, Yugo fosters sustainability, personal growth, and career development while building an inclusive, collaborative, and forward-thinking culture for residents and team members alike.
The Senior Social Media Manager in the US will own the strategy, content, and day-to-day execution of Yugo's social presence in our largest and most competitive market. Equal parts strategist and maker, you'll turn our brand into platform-native content that students save and send to their group chat and help shape how Yugo shows up globally. You'll work hand in hand with our US teams to grow genuine cultural credibility with students, measured by depth of engagement, not follower count.
Because learning well and living well are inseparable. And when you put students first, really first, you create an environment where students thrive, not only build occupancy, but a lifelong brand affinity that travels with students beyond graduation. In 2025, Yugo became the exclusive student housing operating partner of Visa Cash App Racing Bulls ("VCARB") Formula Oneâ„¢ Team, providing students unparalleled access to unique opportunities and experiences worldwide.
This is a hands-on senior role for someone who can pitch the big idea and then film, edit, and ship it. We're looking for a self-starter with deep Gen Z and US student fluency, a strong creative instinct, and the confidence to lead campaigns, direct contractors, and partner across the business - especially during leasing season.
Requirements
Reporting to the Head of Social Media, here's what you'll be doing!
  • Own US/Global social strategy end to end, from the idea bank to the content calendar to what actually goes live.
  • Translate Yugo's brand voice into scroll-stopping, platform-native content across TikTok, Instagram, and emerging channels.
  • Lead US campaigns and activations, including high-profile brand partnerships, from concept through to results.
  • Work closely with the sales, leasing, and marketing specialist teams, particularly through leasing season, to align content with occupancy goals and local priorities.
  • Create and deliver training and enablement for regional teams and marketing specialists, upskilling them on social best-practice, content creation, and brand voice.
  • Direct and manage freelancers and contractors, keeping quality high and the voice consistent.
  • Use data to steer: double down on what earns saves, shares, and engagement, and cut what doesn't.
  • Partner with the wider social team and property teams to keep the content pipeline flowing.

Sound good so far? Here's what you'll need to thrive in this role!
  • 5+ years in social media, with real ownership of a brand's presence (student, lifestyle, or culture brands a strong plus).
  • Proven success leading social strategy and content in the US market.
  • Hands-on content production skills; shooting, editing, and writing platform-native content.
  • Track record leading campaigns and, ideally, brand partnership activations.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with sales, leasing, or marketing teams.
  • Strong grasp of social analytics and reporting, with a history of acting on the data.
  • Experience managing freelancers, contractors, or junior team members.
  • Experience building or delivering training and enablement for non-social teams.
  • A portfolio of content you've personally made that performed.
  • Experience in student housing, hospitality, or a related sector is desirable.
  • Based in the US, with flexibility to work across time zones and travel as needed.
  • Carbon Literacy Certification or willingness to undertake training

Please note: this role requires flexibility. Particularly during peak periods such as leasing season, you may need to take on tasks and projects beyond the core remit outlined here.
Benefits
As part of the Yugo team, you are eligible for a competitive salary, bonus eligibility, comprehensive benefits and more! Here's a snapshot of what we offer;
  • Competitive salary of $60,000 - $70,000 / annually
  • Generous benefits package! Including health, dental and vision
  • 401k + 4% employer matching
  • Three weeks of PTO
  • Paid Wellness Time
  • 11 paid Holidays
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • 1 Paid Volunteer Day
  • 1 Paid YuDay
  • Company paid STD, LTD and Life insurance

At Yugo, we believe in creating a culture where everyone belongs and feels empowered to do their best work. If you're looking to make an impact in a people-first environment, apply today!
