What is a Freelance Video Editing job?

A Freelance Video Editing job involves editing and enhancing video content for clients on a project-by-project basis. Freelancers work independently, using editing software to cut, arrange, and improve raw footage according to client specifications. They may also add effects, transitions, audio, and color corrections to create a polished final product. This job allows flexibility in choosing clients, setting rates, and working remotely.

What is the 80 20 rule in video editing?

The 80/20 rule in video editing suggests that roughly 80% of the final product comes from 20% of the editing effort, emphasizing the importance of focusing on key scenes and cuts. For freelance video editors, prioritizing essential edits and efficient workflow can improve productivity and client satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Freelance Video Editing position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Video Editor, you need expertise in video editing principles, storytelling techniques, and a strong portfolio demonstrating your creative skills. Mastery of industry-standard software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve is commonly required, and certifications in these tools can be advantageous. Time management, clear communication with clients, and adaptability to shifting project needs are vital soft skills. These competencies are essential to consistently deliver high-quality projects on time, meet diverse client expectations, and build a successful freelance career.

What are some typical challenges faced by freelance video editors, and how can they be managed?

Freelance video editors often encounter challenges such as managing fluctuating workloads, maintaining steady client pipelines, and navigating varied client feedback. To succeed, it's important to develop strong organizational habits, set clear project expectations, and establish effective processes for addressing revisions. Building a reliable network and consistently updating your skill set can help you find new opportunities and stay competitive. Many freelancers also recommend using project management tools to track deadlines and communications, so you can balance multiple projects with ease and maintain professional relationships.

How much to edit a 2 minute video?

For a freelance video editor, the cost to edit a 2-minute video typically ranges from $50 to $200, depending on complexity, editing style, and turnaround time. Rates may vary based on experience, project requirements, and whether additional services like color correction or special effects are needed.

Is AI replacing video editors?

AI tools are increasingly used in video editing to automate tasks like color correction, scene detection, and basic editing, but they do not fully replace the creative and nuanced work of freelance video editors. Human editors are still essential for storytelling, creative decisions, and complex editing tasks that require artistic judgment. Many editors now incorporate AI as a complementary tool to improve efficiency and productivity.

Job description

Bully Pulpit International is an outcomes agency made up of strategists, data scientists, and artists. We come from politics, brands, and government and we communicate without barriers and measure what matters. We have more than 400 team members in six countries and thirteen offices - Berlin, Brussels, Chicago, D.C., London, Los Angeles, New York, Oslo, San Francisco, and Zurich. We apply our unique expertise across strategic communications, public affairs, research, and digital marketing to create sophisticated and customized strategies that make change possible for both American and European clients.

The Impact You Will Make

We are an ambitious, fast-growing team seeking a generative AI video creative to be a key force in shaping visually powerful, memorable campaigns for clients worldwide. Fast, fearless, and full of personality, you make an impact on every cut. You not only have the ability to creatively polish high-end generative AI video clips, but you also have traditional video post-production pedigree-understanding shot selection, pacing, music, SFX, and GFX to craft compelling stories. This is your chance to collaborate with a passionate team and help define the visual voice of campaigns that resonate globally.

We are building a roster of elite freelance AI video creatives who can rapidly concept, generate, and craft high-quality advertising and social content using emerging generative AI workflows. Working closely with Creative Directors, Producers, Strategists, and Client teams, you will help bring campaigns to life across social, digital, broadcast, and integrated channels.

This role is not simply about prompting tools - it's about creative judgment, storytelling, editorial instincts, and understanding how to translate strategic ideas into emotionally resonant visual content at speed. The ideal partner understands both the opportunities and limitations of AI-driven production, can work quickly under tight timelines, and knows how to deliver polished, brand-safe creative that still feels human, culturally relevant, and creatively elevated.

What You'll Do

  • Translate Briefs: Take strategic briefs, concepts, or scripts and single-handedly translate them into visually compelling concepts and executions using AI-assisted workflows.
  • Rapidly Prototype: Generate and iterate creative directions quickly for internal and client review, adapting to feedback on the fly.
  • Generate and Edit: Use AI-powered tools to create, edit, color-grade, and sound-design high-quality video content across a variety of formats.
  • Seamlessly Integrate: Blend AI-generated assets with live-action, motion graphics, stock footage, VO, music, and sound design when needed to create a unified aesthetic.
  • Deliver Polished Outputs: Ensure all edits are broadcast-ready or social-ready, carefully managing AI artifacts and maintaining visual consistency.
  • Manage Risk (IP & Licensing): Maintain strict awareness of licensing, IP, likeness usage, and platform-specific considerations related to generative AI content.
  • Provide Strategic Guidance: Help establish best practices and realistic expectations around AI-assisted production capabilities, timelines, and outputs.
  • Collaborate Effectively: Act as a trusted partner alongside agency creative, strategy, production, and account teams in a fast-moving, integrated environment.

Requirements

  • AI Fluency: Deep, hands-on mastery of top-tier generative models (e.g., Midjourney, Runway, Veo, Sora, LTX, ElevenLabs) and upscaling tools (e.g., Topaz Video AI).
  • Cinematic Experience: The ideal candidate has experience with directing and/or cinematography. Your understanding of lighting, framing, and lens selection help guide and elevate your AI generations.
  • Elevated Taste Level: High taste level and strong editorial judgment across pacing, performance, composition, sound, and emotional storytelling. Your creative instincts go far beyond technical tool knowledge.
  • Versatility: Experience creating both punchy, social-first content and highly polished, nuanced campaign creative.
  • Production Reality: The ability to balance speed, experimentation, and production realities while maintaining top-tier quality.
  • Temperament & Mindset: Highly organized, reliable, and communicative. You are comfortable operating independently while seamlessly integrating into collaborative agency workflows and troubleshooting the unpredictability of AI outputs.

Bonus Points For:

  • Audio Editing Skills: Exceptional sound design capabilities (SFX and Foley) to bring silent AI video generations to life and ground them in reality.
  • Color Correction/Grading Skills: The ability to seamlessly match disparate AI shots and live-action footage.
  • Advanced AI Workflows: Experience with node-based AI interfaces (like ComfyUI), local model running, or custom model training.
  • Motion Graphics Skills: The ability to design and animate custom typography, transitions, and graphic overlays (e.g., in After Effects) that seamlessly integrate with generative footage to deliver dynamic, fully branded campaigns.
