Collins Aerospace is seeking a motivated Senior Principal Systems Engineer join the Future Systems team supporting development of the Collins Flight Deck. This role offers the opportunity to work on real avionics programs and gain hands-on experience across the systems lifecycle—from requirements and architecture through integration, verification, and delivery. As part of the team, you will work alongside experienced engineers to help define high-level system behavior, decompose requirements, support avionics architecture development, and contribute to system verification activities. You will lead a small team of designers, human factors, and systems engineers through design of a next generation aviation user interface. You will work directly with customers and pilot teams to design the next generation UI/UX. This is a strong fit for those who enjoy solving technical problems, learning complex systems, and collaborating across software, systems, and test disciplines. 

This is an onsite position in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

What You Will Do: 

  • Support development and verification of avionics system requirements and behaviors. 
  • Contribute to architecture, interface, and system design discussions for next-generation flight deck capabilities. 
  • Create, update, and execute verification artifacts such as test procedures, test cases, and supporting analysis. 
  • Help investigate defects, analyze system behavior, and support root-cause activities during integration and test. 
  • Work with engineers across systems, software, and test to solve technical problems and improve product quality. 
  • Demonstrate ownership of assigned tasks by driving work to closure and communicating progress, risks, and questions proactively. 
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team of systems, software, integration, and test engineers to develop and deliver avionics system solutions. Support development, analysis, and refinement of system requirements and interfaces. 
  • Contribute to verification planning and test development to ensure implementations satisfy system requirements. 
  • Participate in technical reviews of requirements, design artifacts, and test procedures, while incorporating feedback into your own work. 
  • Assist with system integration, troubleshooting, and issue resolution in lab and development environments. 
  • Communicate technical status, issues, and proposed solutions clearly to team members and mentors. 
  • Travel up to 10% per year

  • How avionics systems are developed across the full engineering lifecycle, from concept and requirements through integration and verification. 
  • How to work with system requirements, architecture artifacts, and verification methods used on real aerospace programs. 
  • How to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment with mentorship from a dedicated technical “copilot” and other experienced team members. 
  • How to apply structured problem solving, technical communication, and engineering rigor in a safety-critical domain. 
     

Qualifications you must have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience
  • Avionics User Interface Development Experience and strong understanding of aircraft use and CONOPS is required
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment. 
  • Previous experience taking ownership of assigned work, follow through on commitments, and deliver quality results.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical ideas, assumptions, and issues.

The salary range for this role is 132,400 USD - 251,600 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills. Hired applicants may be eligible for benefits, including but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, flexible work schedules, employee assistance program, Employee Scholar Program, parental leave, paid time off, and holidays. Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement.
