Overview

A television writer creates original material for a variety of television shows, including dramas, comedies, soap operas, talk shows, game shows, documentaries, reality shows, and made‑for‑TV movies. Writers may begin in entry‑level roles such as a writer’s assistant and progress to supervisory or executive positions such as series producer or editor.

Responsibilities
  • Write stories, scripts, and dialogue for television programs.
  • Develop characters and plot lines for individual episodes or serial arcs.
  • Pitch new show concepts and episode ideas to networks and production companies.
  • Collaborate with other writers or work independently, depending on the show’s structure.
  • Research topics and incorporate researched material into scripts.
  • Rewrite and revise scripts as directed by showrunners or producers.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated writing talent and strong storytelling ability.
