Job description

The Role
We're hiring a Freelance Social Video Producer to help transform Capital B's journalism into compelling, social-first video.
Working alongside a freelance video editor, you'll identify timely stories, shape editorial framing, write scripts, and shepherd projects from idea through production. You'll collaborate closely with a video editor, reporters, and Audience teammates to create videos that make our reporting accessible, engaging, and built for platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Threads.
This role is equal parts journalist, producer, and storyteller. The ideal candidate has strong editorial instincts, understands how people consume news on social media, and knows how to translate complex reporting into videos people actually want to watch.
What You'll Do
  • Pitch timely story ideas informed by Capital B's reporting, breaking news, and conversations happening in Black communities
  • Identify reporting that can be adapted into compelling, social-first storytelling
  • Research, report, and fact-check stories using reliable sources
  • Write concise, engaging scripts optimized for short-form video
  • Develop creative approaches that make nuanced reporting accessible without sacrificing accuracy
  • Gather visuals, reporting, archival material, and supporting assets for production
  • Partner closely with a freelance video editor, providing editorial guidance throughout the production process
  • Ensure every video meets Capital B's standards for accuracy, sourcing, fairness, and platform best practices
  • Stay ahead of news, internet culture, and platform trends to identify opportunities for new storytelling formats

Success Will Look Like
  • You consistently identify stories that resonate with Black audiences across platforms.
  • You turn complex reporting into engaging videos that are clear, accurate, and easy to follow.
  • You contribute fresh ideas that help Capital B continue evolving its social storytelling.

What You'll Bring
  • 2-4 years of experience producing digital journalism, social video, or editorial content
  • Strong editorial judgment and news instincts
  • Excellent writing skills, with experience scripting short-form video
  • Experience researching, fact-checking, and synthesizing information from multiple sources
  • A strong understanding of TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts, and emerging platforms
  • Exceptional organization and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Comfort working independently in a collaborative, deadline-driven newsroom
  • Interest in journalism that serves Black communities
  • Familiarity with Adobe Premiere Pro and Canva
  • Curiosity about new storytelling formats and emerging audience behaviors

About Capital B
