Freelance Software Engineer 150K information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance software engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, experience in software development methodologies, and a solid portfolio demonstrating your expertise, often backed by a relevant degree or certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, and proficiency in multiple programming languages are typically required. Outstanding communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities help freelancers manage client relationships and project deadlines effectively. These skills are crucial for delivering quality work independently, building client trust, and maintaining a steady flow of high-value projects.

What is a freelance software engineer?

A Freelance Software Engineer is a self-employed professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software solutions for various clients on a contract or project basis. Unlike traditional employees, freelancers have the flexibility to choose their projects, set their rates, and work remotely or on-site. Earning $150K typically means they have significant experience, specialized skills, or handle multiple high-paying clients. Freelance software engineers often manage their own business operations, including client communications, invoicing, and taxes. This career path offers autonomy but also requires strong self-discipline and business acumen.

What are some typical challenges freelance software engineers face when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelance software engineers often juggle several projects at once, which can make time management and setting clear expectations with clients challenging. Keeping track of shifting priorities, varying codebases, and different communication styles requires strong organizational skills and adaptability. It's also important to establish clear contracts and boundaries to avoid scope creep and ensure timely payments. Effective communication and regular status updates help maintain positive client relationships and keep projects on track.

About Ixana

Ixana is a Purdue University spinoff pioneering brain‑inspired wearable computing. We've developed Wi‑R, a patented communication tech that is 100x more energy‑efficient than Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi. Join our 60‑person team building the next era of real‑time, AI‑powered human‑computer interaction.

The Wi‑R Revolution

Wi‑R is our patented non‑radiative near‑field communication technology that creates secure “wire‑like wireless” experiences through small E‑field bubbles around your body. This breakthrough enables unprecedented energy efficiency at sub‑0.1 nanojoules per bit, making long‑term wearable and implantable devices finally practical.

The Role: Senior Embedded Software Engineer (Wearables & IoT)

Own and deliver embedded software powering a new class of ultra‑low‑power wearable and IoT devices built with our Wi‑R platform.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead bare‑metal bring‑up of Wi‑R SoCs and Cortex‑M/RISC‑V platforms
  • Build and optimize low‑power firmware stacks (I²C, SPI, BLE, DMA, sensor drivers, power domains)
  • Architect and deliver a production‑ready firmware SDK used by Tier‑1 hardware partners
  • Debug at the register level using oscilloscopes and JTAG tools
  • Mentor junior developers and contribute to code reviews, toolchain decisions, and quality standards
What We’re Looking For Required
  • 5+ years building embedded firmware for wearables, medical, or IoT devices
  • Strong C/C++ skills and deep experience with low‑level MCU debugging
  • Proven track record of power‑optimized embedded development on Cortex‑M or similar platforms
  • Comfort leading technical decisions and collaborating across teams
  • Bare‑metal embedded C expertise
Preferred
  • Experience with RTOS, BLE stack customization, or neural/biometric sensing
  • PCB‑level hardware familiarity or embedded Linux experience
  • Experience building and shipping SDKs for third‑party use
Compensation & Benefits

Base Salary: $115,000 – $150,000 per annum (around $225k to $290k Bay‑Area equivalent after cost‑of‑living)

Equity: Early‑stage equity package

Cash Bonus: 8–30% bonus based on performance

Benefits Package
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match
  • 5 days a week in office. Flexible work arrangements and generous PTO
  • Relocation support for qualified candidates
  • Professional development opportunities and conference attendance
  • Patent development and technology leadership opportunities
  • Immigration and work visa support as long as you are already in US on a work permit
Why Join Us
  • Shape the firmware DNA of next‑gen wearables and IoT devices
  • Collaborate with world‑class experts and hardware innovators
  • Ship to real customers within months, not years
  • Join a tight‑knit firmware team within a fast‑scaling deep‑tech startup
  • Enjoy high‑impact ownership and full access to R&D labs
Location

West Lafayette, IN – Join our core R&D hub. We provide relocation support for engineers from major US tech hubs, including the Bay Area.

Application Requirements
  • Resume
  • Short write‑up or sample code from a project you’re proud of (or complete our coding challenge)
  • Portfolio or links to any embedded SDKs, tools, or systems you’ve worked on (optional)
