What is a freelance software developer?

A freelance software developer is a self-employed professional who creates, tests, and maintains software applications for various clients on a contract or project basis. Unlike full-time employees, freelancers typically work independently, manage their own schedules, and may take on multiple projects at once. They can specialize in areas such as web development, mobile app development, or software engineering, and often find work through online platforms, networking, or direct referrals. Freelance software developers are responsible for their own business operations, including client communication, billing, and taxes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance software developer?

To thrive as a Freelance Software Developer, you need strong coding skills in relevant programming languages, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and a portfolio demonstrating completed projects. Familiarity with source control tools like Git, cloud platforms, and project management software is typically essential, along with knowledge of freelance platforms. Excellent communication, time management, and client relationship-building skills help you stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality work independently, attracting and retaining clients, and efficiently managing multiple projects.

How to become a freelance software developer?

Making the transition to working as a freelance software developer entails having extensive knowledge of and experience with several programming languages, ideally those that are in-demand like Java and Python. While you may have expertise in one area, having skills in multiple software technologies can help you find and accept more jobs as you get started. Because you’re working freelance, you need to set up a productive work environment. It’s also essential to compile a portfolio of your best work and host it on either your website or a freelancing job site. This way, you can instantly showcase your experience and skills to a business or client looking to hire for a project, which also helps you negotiate your rate.

What are some typical challenges freelance software developers face when managing multiple clients and projects?

Freelance software developers often juggle several clients at once, which can present challenges in balancing priorities, meeting overlapping deadlines, and maintaining clear communication with each client. Effective time management and setting realistic expectations are essential to avoid burnout and ensure client satisfaction. Additionally, freelancers must stay organized with project tracking tools and proactively address scope changes to keep projects on schedule. Building strong client relationships and transparent communication can help prevent misunderstandings and foster repeat business.

In this role, you will support localisation initiatives across both Product and Marketing, helping ensure multilingual content is delivered efficiently, accurately, and on time. You will coordinate localisation projects across a variety of content types, working closely with stakeholders, freelancers, and localisation partners to support global experiences for our users.

This is a hands-on role focused on project delivery, operational excellence, and process coordination. You will manage multiple localisation projects simultaneously, support the evolution of localisation workflows, and help ensure our content remains culturally relevant and high quality across markets.

The ideal candidate is highly organised, detail-oriented, and comfortable navigating a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders and priorities.

What You'll Do
Project Management
  • Coordinate the end-to-end localisation process for Product and Marketing initiatives.

  • Manage project timelines, priorities, and deliverables to ensure content is delivered on schedule and to a high quality standard.

  • Support localisation efforts across a range of content types, including product UI, feature launches, CRM, web content, paid media, and brand campaigns.

  • Monitor project progress and proactively identify and resolve risks, blockers, and delivery challenges.

  • Ensure localisation requests are appropriately scoped, planned, and communicated throughout the project lifecycle.

Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Partner with teams across Product, Content Design, Marketing, and Engineering to understand localisation requirements and delivery timelines.

  • Provide guidance on localisation processes, timelines, and best practices.

  • Act as a primary point of contact for localisation project coordination and communication.

  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders to support effective planning and execution.

Operations & Process Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to improve localisation workflows, tools, and processes.

  • Support the implementation of new workflows for emerging content types and business needs.

  • Maintain localisation documentation, workflow guides, and best practice resources.

  • Contribute to initiatives that improve efficiency, scalability, and quality across the localisation function.

Tools & Technology
  • Work with Translation Management Systems (TMS), content management platforms, and project management tools to coordinate localisation work.

  • Support automation and AI-assisted localisation workflows where appropriate.

  • Help improve localisation tooling, integrations, and operational processes.

  • Stay informed on localisation industry trends and emerging technologies.

About You
Required Experience
  • 3-5+ years of experience in localisation, project management, content operations, or a related field.

  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong understanding of localisation, transcreation, and cultural adaptation principles.

  • Experience working with Translation Management Systems (TMS) and project management tools.

  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Knowledge of additional languages.

Nice to Have
  • Experience supporting both Product and Marketing localisation workflows.

  • Familiarity with software development and content creation processes.

  • Experience working with Jira, Asana, or similar project management tools.

  • Experience with multimedia localisation, including subtitles and video content.

  • Experience using AI-assisted localisation tools and automation workflows.

  • Degree in Localisation, Translation, Communications, Marketing, Linguistics, or equivalent practical experience.

Success in this Role

You enjoy bringing structure to complex projects and collaborating with a variety of teams to get things done. You are proactive, adaptable, and comfortable balancing multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of quality and attention to detail.

You are passionate about languages, cultures, and creating great user experiences, and you are excited by the opportunity to support localisation across both Product and Marketing.
