Freelance Robotics Software Engineer information

What does a freelance robotics software engineer do?

A Freelance Robotics Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains software systems that control robots and automated devices. They work independently or on contract to build algorithms, integrate hardware and software, and troubleshoot robotic systems for clients in various industries. Their responsibilities may include programming robot behaviors, developing user interfaces, and collaborating with engineers to ensure optimal robot performance. Freelancers often manage their own schedules and projects, providing flexible expertise to startups, research labs, or manufacturing companies.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a freelance robotics software engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance Robotics Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (commonly in C++, Python, or ROS), a solid understanding of robotics concepts, and typically a degree in computer science, robotics, or engineering. Expertise with robotics simulation tools (like Gazebo), version control systems (such as Git), and familiarity with hardware integration are highly valued, and certifications in robotics or software development can be advantageous. Exceptional problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for managing independent projects and collaborating with clients. These skills ensure you can deliver robust, innovative solutions while adapting quickly to client needs and the evolving landscape of robotics technology.

How do freelance robotics software engineers typically collaborate with hardware teams during a project?

Freelance Robotics Software Engineers often work closely with hardware teams to ensure seamless integration between software and physical components. This collaboration may involve regular meetings, shared documentation, version control systems, and testing sessions to troubleshoot issues. Effective communication and flexibility are key, as hardware changes may require rapid software adjustments. Freelancers typically use remote collaboration tools and may occasionally visit on-site for system testing or deployment.

What is the difference between Freelance Robotics Software Engineer vs Robotics Software Developer?

AspectFreelance Robotics Software EngineerRobotics Software Developer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in robotics, computer science, or related fields; certifications are optionalUsually holds a degree in robotics, computer science, or engineering; certifications can enhance prospects
Work EnvironmentIndependent, project-based, often remote or client-siteEmployed by companies or research institutions, working in office or lab settings
Employer & Industry UsageFreelance roles across various industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and researchFull-time roles within robotics, automation, or tech companies

In summary, Freelance Robotics Software Engineers work independently on diverse projects, often remotely, while Robotics Software Developers are typically employed full-time within organizations. Both roles require similar technical skills and educational backgrounds, but differ mainly in work setup and employment status.

Job description

About fab2

The fab2 team can build anything. We design all the hardware and software needed to make chips and we make the fabs, tools, and components ourselves.
We're looking for exceptional, hands-on people who can iterate to the limits of what's possible.

fab2 was founded by Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller. Sam is best known for making chips in his garage, and Jim has been a leader in the semiconductor industry for the past 40 years.

About the team

fab2 prints chips. fab2 prints fabs. The Software team builds the software that runs it all.

About the role

We’re looking for a Software Engineer to build the AI platform behind fab2.

This is a greenfield role with broad ownership across our AI stack. You’ll build the infrastructure and agent systems that turn engineering knowledge and workflows into useful tools for teams across fab2.

Responsibilities
  • Build the infrastructure for using AI models across cloud providers and our own on-prem compute.

  • Develop agents, shared skills, MCP servers, and sandboxed execution environments.

  • Create evals and benchmarks to measure where agents work, where they fail, and how to improve them.

  • Turn engineering knowledge and repeatable workflows into shared AI tools teams can build on.

  • Develop AI systems for automated experimentation, defect detection, engineering analysis, and fab operations.

  • Explore systems that can analyze results, propose what to do next, and eventually interact with physical equipment.

  • Help shape how AI gets used across Fab2 and inside the fab.

Required Experience
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience shipping production systems.

  • Comfortable working across frontend, backend, infrastructure, and data.

  • Effective with AI coding tools while still able to read, write, debug, and reason about code independently.

  • Strong product instincts and an ability to turn ambiguous problems into working systems.

  • Strong technical communication and a high degree of ownership.

Nice-to-have
  • Founding engineer, CTO, or early-stage startup background.

  • Experience building AI agents, developer tools, evals, or ML infrastructure.

  • Hands-on work with GPU or on-prem compute infrastructure.

  • Exposure to robotics, hardware, scientific computing, or automated experimentation.

  • Experience building software for regulated environments.

Working at fab2

We’re an early-stage hardware startup with solid funding, world-class advisors, and a lab/office in Austin, TX and San Francisco, CA.

Compensation:

fab2 is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The annual salary range for this role is $140,000 – $200,000. Compensation is determined based on your qualifications and experience. Our total compensation package also includes generous equity in fab2.

Benefits:
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance

  • Generous Paid Time Off inclusive of Holidays and Sick Time

  • Visa Sponsorship

  • Life and Disability Insurance

  • Paid Parental Leave

  • 401(k) retirement plan

  • Weekly Learning & Development opportunities

  • Commuter Benefits including Parking and Late Night Uber rides from the office

  • Lunches daily, Dinners 3x per week, Stocked Office Kitchen with Snacks and Spindrifts

We are an equal-opportunity employer and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, veteran status, disability or other legally protected statuses.

Export Control Analysis:

This position involves access to technology that is subject to U.S. export controls. Any job offer made will be contingent upon the applicant’s capacity to serve in compliance with U.S. export controls.
