What does a Freelance RF Filter Design Engineer do?

A Freelance RF Filter Design Engineer specializes in designing, developing, and testing radio frequency (RF) filters that are used to allow or block specific frequency signals in electronic devices. They work independently or on contract to provide custom solutions for clients in telecommunications, aerospace, defense, and consumer electronics. Their role typically involves circuit simulation, schematic design, prototyping, and ensuring that filters meet technical requirements for performance and reliability. Freelance engineers often offer flexibility and specialized expertise for companies needing short-term or project-based RF filter development.

What is the difference between Freelance Rf Filter Design Engineer vs RF Circuit Design Engineer?

AspectFreelance Rf Filter Design EngineerRF Circuit Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires RF engineering certifications, specialized training in filter designRequires RF engineering degrees, certifications, and circuit design expertise
Work EnvironmentIndependent, project-based, often remoteIn-house or consulting, team-based environments
Industry UsageUsed in telecommunications, aerospace, defense for custom filter solutionsApplied across wireless, consumer electronics, and communication systems

While both roles involve RF engineering, a Freelance Rf Filter Design Engineer specializes in designing RF filters independently for various clients, focusing on custom solutions. An RF Circuit Design Engineer has a broader scope, working on various RF circuits within a company or project team. The freelance role offers flexibility and specialization, whereas the RF Circuit Design Engineer typically works within structured teams on diverse RF projects.

How do Freelance RF Filter Design Engineers typically collaborate with clients and other engineers during a project?

Freelance RF Filter Design Engineers often work remotely, using digital communication tools to collaborate with clients, project managers, and sometimes other engineering specialists. They typically participate in virtual meetings to discuss specifications, share design progress, and address technical challenges. Providing regular updates and detailed documentation is essential, as is being responsive to feedback and design revisions throughout the project. Clear communication and efficient use of simulation and CAD tools help ensure the final filter meets performance and integration requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance RF Filter Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance RF Filter Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, strong understanding of RF principles, and experience in filter design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with simulation tools like ADS, HFSS, or CST, and familiarity with PCB design software are commonly required, along with knowledge of relevant industry standards. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help set candidates apart, especially when working with remote clients or multidisciplinary teams. These capabilities ensure precise, efficient filter designs that meet client specifications and project deadlines in a competitive market.

Job description

Overview:ย  Solopulse is a dual-use deep technology company developing next-generation RF systems. Our Products Division implements and delivers fielded systems for a range of government and prime contractor customers. We operate with a small-team culture that values technical depth, ownership, and rapid iteration.

SoloPulse is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join our Products Division. In this role you will own the end-to-end systems engineering lifecycle for our payload and RF product line, from the capture of operational requirements through final system-level verification. You will also serve as the technical lead for standing up and maintaining the company's configuration management process, ensuring disciplined control of system baselines across all customer programs. The ideal candidate brings deep RF hardware and software integration experience, ideally in electronic warfare applications, and can operate with independence across the full systems engineering V.

You will operate in a matrixed environment with the following responsibilities:

Systems Engineering V - Requirements & Design

  • Elicit, document, and manage operational concepts (CONOPS) and mission-level requirements in collaboration with customers and program managers.
  • Derive system-level technical requirements from operational needs; allocate requirements to subsystems, software, and hardware components.
  • Develop and maintain system architecture documentation including Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Functional Baseline (FBL), and Allocated Baseline (ABL).
  • Lead system design reviews (SRR, SDR, PDR, CDR) and ensure requirements traceability is maintained throughout the design process.

Systems Engineering V - Verification & Validation

  • Author and execute component- and system-level Verification & Validation (V&V) plans, test procedures, and test reports.
  • Define acceptance criteria and lead Integration, Test & Evaluation (IT&E) activities across hardware and software subsystems.
  • Develop and maintain Requirements Verification Traceability Matrices (RVTMs) ensuring full closure of requirements from derivation through verification.
  • Conduct subsystem qualification and system acceptance testing; document and resolve discrepancies through formal non-conformance and corrective action processes.

Configuration Management

  • Lead the establishment of the Solopulse Configuration Management (CM) process, including CM plan development, tool selection, and process implementation across the product lifecycle.
  • Define and manage system configuration baselines (Functional, Allocated, and Product) and control changes through a formal Configuration Control Board (CCB) process.
  • Maintain and publish System Configuration Documents (SCDs), Interface Control Documents, and engineering change documentation for all active customer configurations.
  • Ensure CM discipline is applied consistently across multi-customer programs and evolving system configurations; provide CM status accounting and audit support.
  • Integrate CM practices with program and product lifecycle gates, ensuring baseline integrity at each phase transition.

Hardware & Software Integration

  • Support hardware-software integration activities for RF payload systems, including interface definition, integration sequencing, and troubleshooting of integration anomalies.
  • Collaborate with embedded software, FPGA, and hardware engineering teams to resolve integration issues and validate system-level performance against requirements.
  • Develop and maintain system integration procedures, interface test harnesses, and integration lab environments.
  • Participate in trade studies and design decisions that span the hardware-software boundary, providing systems-level perspective on implementation choices.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • 7+ years of systems engineering experience on defense or aerospace programs, including direct application of the systems engineering V process from requirements capture through system-level V&V.
  • Demonstrated experience authoring and managing systems engineering artifacts: ConOps, SRD/SRS, ICDs, V&V plans, RVTMs, and test reports.
  • Hands-on experience leading or directly supporting the establishment or operation of a formal Configuration Management process, including CCB participation and baseline management.
  • Working knowledge of hardware and software development processes and the integration challenges that arise at their interface.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to clearly present technical content to both engineering teams and program leadership.
  • U.S. citizenship required; ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance (TS/SCI).
  • Experience with RF systems engineering, including RF link budgets, antenna design trades, signal chain analysis, and RF payload integration.
  • Background in Electronic Warfare (EW) systems - including threat warning, jamming, or SIGINT/ELINT payloads - and familiarity with applicable EW test & evaluation methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and practices (e.g., Cameo Systems Modeler, SysML).
  • Experience with CM toolsets such as Windchill, DOORS, Jira, or equivalent PDM/PLM platforms.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-1553, or other applicable defense standards.
  • Active DoD Secret or Top Secret / SCI clearance.
  • Experience working on small, fast-moving product teams where individual contributors own broad scopes of technical work.
