Job Title: CMM TechnicianJob Description

The CMM Technician supports high-volume production of small, injection molded metal components by creating, qualifying, and implementing precise measurement processes. This role works closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure accurate dimensional verification, robust product qualification, and continuous improvement of measurement methods in a fast-paced production environment.

Responsibilities
  • Review new product designs and recommend the most effective measurement processes using a range of tools, including hand measurement tools, custom fixtures, visual inspection systems, and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs).
  • Create detailed measurement processes for new product designs and rigorously evaluate them to ensure accuracy, repeatability, and practicality for use in a high-volume production environment.
  • Perform new product qualification activities, including First Article Inspections, gage repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R) studies, and capability studies to validate measurement and process performance.
  • Program and operate CMMs (such as OPG, Zeiss, and Mitutoyo) using software like Zone3, PC-DMIS, Calypso, or similar platforms to execute measurement routines.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to develop comprehensive measurement plans and inspection strategies.
  • Support production and quality assurance activities to keep production running efficiently and to disposition nonconforming or suspect material effectively.
  • Troubleshoot CMM programs and measurement issues, making necessary adjustments to improve reliability and throughput.
  • Continuously improve measurement procedures, methods, and documentation to enhance accuracy, reduce variation, and increase efficiency.
  • Apply dimensional metrology principles and a strong understanding of GD&T to verify part conformance and support engineering decisions.
  • Utilize statistical process control (SPC) and gage R&R analysis to monitor and improve measurement systems and production processes.
Essential Skills
  • 3–5 years of experience as a CMM Technician in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Strong proficiency in programming and operating CMMs, including systems such as OPG, Zeiss, and Mitutoyo.
  • Hands-on experience using CMM software such as Zone3, PC-DMIS, Calypso, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to create effective measurement plans.
  • Strong understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), including ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Solid background in dimensional metrology and quality inspection practices.
  • Experience conducting gage R&R studies and analyzing measurement system performance.
  • Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) and its application in a production environment.
  • Experience performing CMM inspection, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining high accuracy and attention to detail.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a technical field such as Mechanical Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Technology is preferred.
  • Experience with molded metal components is a plus.
  • Familiarity with visual inspection systems, custom fixtures, and hand measurement tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to solve problems and improve processes.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including a bump cap, hearing protection, safety glasses, and safety-toed shoes.
  • Ability to work with ITAR-controlled products and data as a US Person as defined by applicable regulations.
