What is freelance pattern making?

Freelance pattern making involves creating patterns for garments or textile products on a project-by-project basis, typically working independently for fashion designers, clothing brands, or manufacturers. Pattern makers translate design sketches into detailed templates that guide the cutting and assembly of fabric pieces. As freelancers, they often work remotely, set their own schedules, and may handle multiple clients at once. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of garment construction and fit.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance pattern maker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Pattern Maker, you need a strong understanding of garment construction, textile properties, and drafting techniques, often supported by a degree in fashion design or related field. Proficiency with pattern-making software such as Adobe Illustrator, Gerber, or CLO 3D, as well as knowledge of grading and technical specifications, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication help distinguish top freelancers when collaborating with clients and manufacturers. These skills and qualities ensure accurate, high-quality patterns that meet design requirements and production standards in a competitive industry.

What are some common challenges freelance pattern makers face when working with multiple clients, and how can they manage these effectively?

Freelance pattern makers often juggle projects from several clients with varying expectations, deadlines, and communication styles. One common challenge is maintaining clear communication to ensure all specifications are understood, as miscommunication can lead to costly revisions. Effective time management and setting clear boundaries for revisions and delivery timelines are crucial to avoid overlapping deadlines and burnout. Utilizing project management tools and establishing a structured workflow can help streamline processes and keep client projects organized. Regularly updating clients and confirming details throughout the pattern development process also helps build trust and minimize misunderstandings.

What is the difference between Freelance Pattern Making vs Pattern Cutter?

AspectFreelance Pattern MakingPattern Cutter
CredentialsKnowledge of pattern drafting, sewing, and garment constructionExpertise in pattern alteration and garment fitting
Work EnvironmentIndependent, often remote or client-basedStudio or workshop, collaborating with designers and manufacturers
Industry UsageUsed by fashion designers, small brands, and freelance professionalsEmployed by fashion houses, factories, or as freelancers

Freelance Pattern Making involves creating initial garment patterns based on design specifications, focusing on drafting and design accuracy. Pattern Cutters typically work on refining and altering these patterns to ensure proper fit and construction. While both roles require pattern knowledge, Freelance Pattern Makers often handle the entire drafting process independently, whereas Pattern Cutters focus on pattern refinement and fitting. Understanding these differences helps clients choose the right professional for their garment production needs.

What career can you have with freelance pattern making?

Freelance pattern makers can pursue careers in fashion design, apparel production, costume design, or technical design. They often work independently or as consultants for clothing brands, manufacturers, or designers, utilizing skills in pattern drafting, sewing, and CAD software. This career offers flexibility and the opportunity to specialize in specific garment types or industries.

You’ll join 300 B2B experts across strategy, data, creative, media, client services, Sales activation, and shared services. Different skills brought together in integrated teams, centred around our clients: the world’s most impactful tech companies.

So, if you’re interested in what makes the world work, if you find solving complex problems fun, and you love making the answers as simple as possible, then we’d love to hear from you.

What we are looking for

This role exists to optimise how people and partners are deployed across global portfolios, ensuring the right talent is on the right projects at the right time. You’ll oversee day-to-day resourcing, balancing full-time and contractor teams to meet delivery needs and operational goals. Acting as a bridge between Delivery, Creative, Strategy, and Operations, you’ll resolve capacity conflicts, facilitate portfolio resourcing discussions, and ensure global capacity is leveraged effectively. This is a strategic and hands‑on role requiring strong commercial acumen, stakeholder management, and operational rigour.

What you will do: Resource Planning & Allocation
  • Oversee daily resourcing across multiple client portfolios, in close partnership with Delivery and Creative/Strategy leads.
  • Lead global portfolio resourcing calls, facilitating capacity discussions and resolving conflicts quickly and pragmatically.
  • Partner with global counterparts to manage cross-regional allocations and ensure equitable workload distribution.
  • Monitor utilisation, availability, and forecast data to identify trends, gaps, or risks in advance.
  • Support business cases for new hires or long-term contractor engagement based on demand and forecast trends.
Contractor Management
  • Oversee all administrative and operational aspects of onboarding, extensions, and offboarding for contingent talent.
  • Ensure freelancer usage is within commercial targets and aligned with hiring policy.
  • Ensure compliance with IR35 and TMP’s vendor management standards.
  • Track and report on contractor spend and usage patterns, providing insight to Delivery and Finance teams.
Operational Excellence & Process Improvement
  • Maintain high‑quality data in Kantata (and associated systems) to ensure accurate reporting across utilisation, forecasting, and capacity planning.
  • Partner with Business Systems & Data and Finance teams to continuously refine forecasting and time‑tracking processes.
  • Drive adoption of new tools, processes, and reporting dashboards within delivery teams.
  • Contribute to the evolution of tmp’s Workforce Operations model by integrating offshoring, specialist resourcing, and flexible capacity models.
People & Partnership
  • Build strong working relationships with Delivery Directors, Client Services, Creative Directors, and Finance partners across the region.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues to develop consistent and proactive resourcing practices.
  • Foster collaboration across regions to create a unified global resourcing culture.
Who you are:
  • Calm and solution‑oriented under pressure, able to navigate complex or changing scenarios with confidence.
  • Knowledgeable about agency resourcing and the strategic use of contractors, understanding when and why to bring them in for support.
  • Operationally sharp, translating complex policies and processes into simple, efficient workflows.
  • An excellent communicator and collaborator, able to build alignment across Delivery, Client Services, Creative, Strategy, and Operations teams.
  • Highly organized and proactive, with strong follow‑through on commitments and the ability to anticipate challenges.
  • Personable problem‑solver who brings clarity and calm to tense situations, keeping operations running smoothly.
What you will need:
  • 3-5+ years of experience in resourcing, workforce planning, or operations within marketing, digital, or professional services environments.
  • Deep understanding of project delivery cycles in creative or B2B marketing contexts.
  • Advanced skills in resource planning and operational tools such as Kantata/Mavenlink, Float, 10kft, Smartsheet, and Excel.
  • Strong commercial mindset, able to balance financial efficiency with operational and resourcing excellence.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and manage stakeholders across senior levels.
  • Confident operating in a complex, matrixed, global environment.
