Freelance UX Strategist

829 Studios

Job description

829 Studios is building a bench of experienced UX strategists we can bring into client work as needed—ranging from focused discovery sprints to large, multi-phase website strategy and redesign engagements.

We engage talent on a project basis, bringing in the right expertise at the right time across a range of client needs, including complex builds for established and growth-stage brands. This is an opportunity to partner with our team on a recurring, project-based basis.

Who this is for

  • Independent UX consultants and career freelancers

  • Strategists comfortable owning workstreams and interfacing directly with clients

  • People who can quickly get up to speed, integrate into a team, and deliver value without heavy oversight

What You'll Do

Our UX strategy work centers on deeply understanding each client’s brand, business, and audience, and translating that into clear, actionable direction. Engagements typically span discovery and stakeholder alignment through information architecture, content strategy, and wireframing across B2B and B2C clients.

You’ll be brought in to:

  • Lead or support stakeholder interviews and workshops

  • Conduct research (competitive, analytics, and user insights)

  • Translate findings into clear strategic direction

  • Develop information architecture, sitemaps, and content frameworks

  • Create lo-fi wireframes in Figma to express thinking

  • Present work to clients and guide them through recommendations

This role is not focused on visual/UI design. We’re looking for strategists who can lead through thinking, communication, and clarity.

What You'll Bring

  • 5–10+ years in UX strategy, ideally in an agency environment

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating research → strategy → IA/wireframes

  • Proven ability to lead client conversations and influence decisions

  • Comfortable collaborating with designers, developers, and marketing teams

  • Familiarity with CMS-driven websites (e.g., WordPress, Drupal, Shopify)

  • How we work

  • Project-based engagements aligned to client needs

  • Remote, primarily Eastern Time collaboration

  • Work is assigned based on fit, availability, and expertise

Hourly Rate Range: $45-$65 per hour
We determine compensation based on experience, demonstrated skills, and current market conditions at the time of hire to ensure fairness and consistency across roles. Actual compensation will depend on experience and may be adjusted based on skills, qualifications, and alignment with the scope and impact of the role.
