Both roles require strong skills in motion graphics software and a compelling portfolio. The main difference is that a Freelance Motion Graphics Designer works independently with clients on a project basis, while a Motion Graphics Artist may work within a studio or agency environment, often as part of a team. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Motion Graphics Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Motion Graphics Designer, you need strong visual storytelling abilities, a solid grasp of animation principles, and proficiency in design, typically backed by a relevant degree or portfolio. Mastery of tools like Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Cinema 4D, and familiarity with video and audio editing software is essential. Exceptional communication, creativity, self-motivation, and time management set outstanding motion designers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality, on-time projects that meet client expectations in a competitive freelance market.

What Does a Freelance Motion Graphics Designer Do?

Freelance motion graphics designers create animation for a video project on a short- or long-term contract basis.. In this context, a video project is any moving, vision-based material displayed on a screen, such as visual effects in movies, video games, television shows, or websites. You may work on the overall design, focus on a particular part of the animation, or be hired after a draft has been completed to edit and modify the video. Freelance motion graphics designers often specialize in specific software suites. For example, those who work for filmmakers may need to utilize Adobe After Effects or Cinema 4D. Freelance motion graphics artists may also provide creative input, suggest animation techniques, and collaborate with other graphic designers for each project.

What is a Freelance Motion Graphics Designer?

A Freelance Motion Graphics Designer is a self-employed professional who creates animated visual content, such as graphics, titles, and effects, for various media including advertisements, films, videos, and digital platforms. These designers use specialized software to bring static images to life and enhance storytelling through movement and visual effects. Working freelance means they are not tied to a single employer but instead take on projects from multiple clients, offering flexibility and a diverse range of work opportunities.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance motion graphics designers, and how can they be managed?

Freelance motion graphics designers often encounter challenges such as fluctuating workloads, rapidly changing client feedback, and tight deadlines. Managing multiple projects simultaneously requires strong organization and communication skills. Job description

Description:

We're a 2025 Netty Award winner for Best Multidisciplinary Design โ€” and we're looking for the next creative force to help us keep raising the bar.

This role is built for a designer who can do it all โ€” stunning large-format print, fluid motion graphics, and compelling video content โ€” and who thrives in a fast-paced environment where every project is different and the work actually ships into the real world.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Culton Companies designs and builds award-winning trade show exhibits, branded commercial interiors, and museum environments for clients across the country โ€” and the visual content our designers create is a big part of what makes those spaces unforgettable. We're looking for a Multimedia Graphics Designer to join our creative team and help us tell powerful brand stories through print, digital, motion, and interactive media.

This is a fast-paced role where no two projects are the same. You'll work across large-format print graphics, digital signage, motion graphics, video content, and interactive displays โ€” and you'll see your work shipped out and installed in real environments, not just published to a feed.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Design visually compelling large- and mid-format print graphics, informational panels, and display imagery โ€” and prepare files that are print-ready to spec
  • Animate and edit motion graphics and video for digital signage, interactive displays, and client presentations
  • Develop design solutions that bring brand stories and narratives to life across both static and motion formats
  • Manage multiple active projects simultaneously, balancing creative quality with production deadlines
  • Collaborate with the design team, sales staff, and clients to understand goals and translate them into effective visual solutions
  • Maintain a consistent, high standard of creative vision across every deliverable

WHAT YOU BRING

Required:

  • Degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Multimedia, or a related field
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating excellence in both graphic design and motion graphics/video
  • Advanced proficiency across the Adobe Creative Suite โ€” specifically:

? Photoshop

After Effects

?? Illustrator

? Premiere Pro

InDesign

  • Experience designing for mid- and large-format print, informational graphics, and interactive content
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt fluidly to shifting priorities
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; team-oriented and comfortable presenting work

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience designing for physical environments โ€” exhibits, museums, branded interiors, or similar
  • Background in interactive content design or touch-screen interface development
  • Motion design experience beyond standard transitions โ€” 3D elements, character animation, or complex compositing

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

  • Full-time, salaried position โ€” Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM โ€“ 5:00 PM
  • Competitive salary based on experience and potential
  • Based at our Trussville, Alabama headquarters facility

THE PERKS

We take care of the people who bring the creative vision:

Health, Dental & Vision

401K Retirement Plan

Paid Parental Leave

PTO + 7 Paid Holidays

? AFLAC & Liberty National

FSA Plan

Online Payroll Access

Quarterly Employee Events

Why Culton?

Our people stay โ€” and there's a reason for that. Culton is the kind of place where your work doesn't live on a screen โ€” it gets fabricated, installed, and experienced by real people in the real world. With a laid-back but driven culture, a team that feels like your best friends, and a genuine commitment to promoting from within, this isn't just a job. It's a career worth building.

Ready to add your talent to an award-winning creative team? We'd love to see your portfolio. Submit your resume and samples when you apply.
