What is a freelance model?

A freelance model finds representation through non-exclusive modeling agencies or seeks out their own opportunities and casting calls. They also utilize their connections in the industry, such as friends or acquaintances who are stylists, photographers, or makeup artists, and may find work through social media networking. Freelance models have many of the same job duties as models who are signed exclusively to a talent agency, lending their looks to various photo shoots and advertisements. However, freelance models must continually market themselves to secure jobs, so having excellent interpersonal skills is especially crucial for a freelance career.

What are some common challenges freelance models face when managing their own schedules and clients?

Freelance models often juggle multiple clients, castings, and shoots, which can make time management a significant challenge. Without an agency, models must handle all aspects of their bookings, including negotiating rates, securing contracts, and managing travel logistics. Additionally, maintaining a steady flow of work requires proactive self-marketing and networking, as well as building a reliable reputation in the industry. Setting clear boundaries with clients and staying organized with calendars and invoicing tools can help freelance models succeed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance model, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Model, you need a strong portfolio, physical fitness, and an understanding of posing and runway techniques, with experience often outweighing formal qualifications. Familiarity with digital portfolio platforms, social media marketing, and basic photo editing tools is essential. Professionalism, adaptability, and strong communication skills help models build lasting client relationships and navigate varied assignments. These competencies ensure visibility in a competitive industry, effective self-promotion, and consistent, high-quality work for clients.

What is the difference between Freelance Model vs Agency Model?

AspectFreelance ModelAgency Model

Work EnvironmentSelf-managed, independent shoots, direct client contactAgency-represented, assigned to clients through agency
Employer & Industry UsageIndividual clients, brands, photographersModeling agencies, fashion brands, event organizers
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for independent work opportunitiesSeeking agency representation or agency-led jobs

The main difference between a Freelance Model and an Agency Model lies in their work management and representation. Freelance Models operate independently, managing their own bookings and client relationships, while Agency Models are represented by agencies that handle their assignments. Both require a portfolio and modeling experience, but agency models often benefit from professional training and agency support. Your choice depends on whether you prefer independent work or agency representation for your modeling career.

Job description

Mid-Atlantic Builders, an award-winning luxury homebuilder in the DC metro area, is seeking a strategic, hands-on Marketing Manager to strengthen our market presence and drive qualified traffic and sales to our communities. This role reports directly to the VP of Sales and Marketing and will oversee a team of three: Online Sales Consultant (OSC), Homebuyer Journey Specialist, and Marketing Coordinator.

The Marketing Manager is responsible for creating, executing, and optimizing a data-driven marketing plan that increases traffic, improves conversion, and strengthens the Mid-Atlantic Builders brand across all channels. Using analytics, market insights, and close collaboration with cross-functional partners, you will own consumer segmentation, marketing budget, branding, and event planning to support sales goals.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Partner with the VP of Sales and Marketing to develop and execute brand standards and community-level marketing plans, budgets, tactics, and vendor strategies that reflect Mid-Atlantic Builders’ elevated, design-driven home collections.
  • Create and oversee all marketing and branding activities, including collateral and sales tools, print and digital advertising, signage, website and landing page content, video/photo assets, email marketing, and social media campaigns.
  • Coordinate and attend special events, grand openings, broker events, and on-site experiences to manage vendors, traffic flow, and brand presentation.
  • Lead sales center and model home marketing: oversee fabrication, ordering, and programming for displays, digital screens, signage, and environmental branding.
  • Conduct ongoing market, brand, and product research; monitor competitors, buyer trends, and internal performance to identify new segments and refine Mid-Atlantic Builders’ unique selling propositions.
  • Ensure OSC and onsite sales teams clearly understand our buyer segmentation, marketing strategy, key messages, and competitive advantages so they can communicate a consistent story to prospects.
  • Take a leadership role in the launch of new communities, products, and floor plans; ensure all sales tools, digital assets, and onsite materials are ready prior to opening, and that community appearance reflects our standards.
  • Serve as the marketing liaison to operations and leadership teams to ensure campaigns, messaging, and deliverables align with divisional objectives and sales priorities.
  • Track and report on sales traffic and lead sources; analyze performance and adjust campaigns to maximize qualified visitors to our community sales centers and online channels.
  • Source, engage, and manage strategic partners and vendors (agencies, consultants, freelancers, and suppliers), including contract negotiation, budget oversight, and workflow management.
  • Possess a desire to stay current with digital trends and new technologies to stay ahead of the curve.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies, tools, and customer experience enhancements that improve the homebuying journey from first contact through post-settlement.
  • Enforce strict adherence to brand standards and guidelines across all internal and external partners to protect and grow the Mid-Atlantic Builders brand.
  • Manage, coach, and develop the OSC, Homebuyer Journey Specialist, and Marketing Coordinator, building a collaborative, performance-focused marketing team.

Does this sound like you?

  • You are analytically minded and comfortable collecting, visualizing, and interpreting data to guide decisions.
  • You approach challenges with creative problem-solving and can pivot as business needs change.
  • You collaborate easily across departments and see yourself as a bridge between sales, operations, and leadership.
  • You communicate clearly and concisely both in writing and in presentations.
  • You have strong business acumen and understand how marketing connects to sales, margins, and overall performance.

Essential Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in marketing or advertising, preferably with a focus on consumer-facing brands.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook 365) and familiarity with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.) and digital marketing best practices.
  • Proficient with Google Ads, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and Google Sheets
  • Experience with SEO and best practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or related field
  • Direct experience developing and managing strategic marketing plans, budgets, and external resources
  • Experience in homebuilder or residential real estate marketing
  • Passionate, results-oriented, and highly motivated; comfortable working in a fast-paced, sales-driven environment
  • Authentic, integrity-driven team player with strong attention to detail
  • Familiarity with CRM and project management platforms (e.g., HubSpot, Salesforce, or similar tools)

Compensation & Benefits

  • $90,000 – $110,000 salary + performance bonus
  • Competitive paid time off and leave benefits, including vacation, holidays, sick leave, paid parental leave, and paid pregnancy leave
  • Medical, dental, vision and HSA options
  • Company-paid life and disability insurance (short-term and long-term)
  • 401(k) with company match
