Public Works Supervisor

Position Type: Temp-to-Hire
Schedule: Full-Time

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Public Works Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of public works crews. This is a full-time, temp-to-hire opportunity for an individual with strong leadership skills and experience supervising maintenance, construction, and municipal infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with department standards.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of public works employees.
  • Assign work orders and prioritize projects to ensure timely completion.
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of streets, drainage systems, parks, rights-of-way, public buildings, and other municipal infrastructure.
  • Ensure employees follow all safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations.
  • Monitor crew productivity, quality of work, and attendance.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure it meets department standards.
  • Train, mentor, and provide guidance to employees.
  • Coordinate equipment usage and ensure vehicles and machinery are properly maintained.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and daily work logs.
  • Respond to emergency situations, including severe weather, utility issues, and other public works emergencies when necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with management, employees, contractors, and the public.

Qualifications

  • Previous supervisory experience in public works, construction, utilities, road maintenance, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, maps, and project plans.
  • Experience operating or overseeing heavy equipment is a plus.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety regulations and best practices.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be dependable, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and around heavy equipment.
