What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance LTE Optimization Engineer, and why are they important?

A Freelance LTE Optimization Engineer needs a deep understanding of LTE network architecture, RF engineering, and experience with wireless communication protocols, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with drive test tools, network analyzers, KPI monitoring software, and certifications like CCNA or vendor-specific credentials (e.g., Ericsson, Nokia) are often required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong analytical thinking, and effective communication skills enable success in client-driven, project-based environments. These skills ensure the delivery of high-performance networks, client satisfaction, and the ability to adapt quickly to diverse technical challenges.

Is there a high demand for network engineers?

There is strong demand for network engineers, including roles like LTE optimization engineers, due to ongoing growth in mobile networks and 5G deployment. Skills in network infrastructure, troubleshooting, and certifications such as Cisco or Nokia are highly valued in this field.

What are the main challenges faced by Freelance LTE Optimization Engineers when working with multiple clients remotely?

Freelance LTE Optimization Engineers often encounter challenges related to accessing client-specific data and tools remotely, which can vary greatly between projects. Coordinating with on-site teams in different time zones and ensuring clear communication about network issues and optimization strategies are also common hurdles. Additionally, freelancers must stay updated on evolving LTE technologies and best practices independently, as they may not have direct access to in-house training resources. Establishing strong client relationships and setting clear expectations upfront can help mitigate many of these challenges.

How to become an optimization engineer?

To become a freelance LTE optimization engineer, you should have a strong background in wireless communications, network engineering, or related fields, along with experience in LTE network design and troubleshooting. Gaining certifications such as Nokia LTE or Ericsson LTE can enhance credibility, and proficiency with tools like TEMS or NetAct is valuable. Continuous learning of industry standards and hands-on experience are essential for success in this role.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

A freelance LTE optimization engineer can potentially earn $500,000 annually with extensive experience, specialized skills in network performance, and a strong client base. High earnings are typically associated with senior-level consultants working on large-scale projects or for major telecom companies, often requiring advanced certifications and a deep understanding of LTE technology.

How much does an RF engineer earn?

RF engineers, including those specializing in LTE optimization, typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually depending on experience, location, and certifications. Senior or specialized engineers with advanced skills in network design and testing can earn higher salaries, especially in competitive markets or with additional certifications like RF or wireless engineering credentials.

What does a Freelance LTE Optimization Engineer do?

A Freelance LTE Optimization Engineer is responsible for analyzing, troubleshooting, and improving the performance of LTE (Long Term Evolution) cellular networks. They work with network data, conduct drive tests, and use specialized software to identify issues and optimize parameters for better coverage, capacity, and quality of service. As freelancers, they may work with various clients such as telecom operators or network vendors, often providing remote or on-site support for network rollout, upgrades, and ongoing optimization projects.

Parallel Wireless

Mundelein, IL

Full-time

Posted 24 days ago

Job description

Parallel Wireless is reimagining mobile networks with innovative, energy-efficient Open RAN solutions. Join us as we lead the future of telecommunications, driving innovation through green and sustainable networks. Learn more about our mission, vision and values.
Job Summary

You will work across the full lifecycle of mobile network infrastructure from lab integration and commissioning through live deployment, performance monitoring, and ongoing optimization. One day you're tracing a signaling failure at the protocol level; the next you're investigating why a cluster of cells is underperforming against their KPI targets. This is a hands-on, technically demanding role with no shortage of variety. You'll be expected to think independently, dig hard when you're stuck, and grow quickly. If you're the kind of person who reads beyond the syllabus and finds mobile networks genuinely fascinating rather than just academically interesting, you'll fit right in. This role is based out of our Head Quarters office in Nashua, NH, 45 miles north of Boston.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deploy, configure, and commission LTE eNodeBs to work with 3 party EPC components (MME, SGW, PGW), and 5G NR/Core elements in lab and live customer environments
  • Perform end-to-end system integration and interface testing across S1, X2, N1, N2, and N3 reference points
  • Analyze protocol traces (S1AP, NGAP, X2AP, E2AP, GTP-U, DIAMETER, SCTP) to diagnose signaling failures, handover issues, and connectivity anomalies
  • Monitor and troubleshoot RAN and core KPIs for accessibility, retainability, mobility, availability and performance and own root-cause analysis when they degrade
  • Operate and maintain network performance management systems, identifying trends and anomalies across multi-vendor environments before they become customer-impacting events
  • Support customer-facing lab trials and network acceptance testing, including direct engagement with operator engineering teams
  • Develop scripts and tooling in Python and Bash to automate data collection, processing, and reporting workflows
  • Write and maintain technically rigorous documentation: network topology diagrams, test plans, commissioning procedures, and incident post-mortems
  • Contribute to the integration of next-generation monitoring capabilities, including AI/ML-driven anomaly detection and intelligent alerting, into operational platforms
  • Stay current on 3GPP specifications, GSMA guidelines, and evolving 5G standards; you'll be expected to read specs, not just summaries of them
Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s or Masters’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Computer Networks, or a related field, recent graduate or up to 1 year of experience
  • Be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • Theoretical foundation in LTE/5G RAN and core network architecture
  • Comfort working in Linux environments from the command line
  • Basic scripting ability in Python or Bash
  • Ability to read and interpret packet captures even if you're still building that skill
  • Analytical mindset: you approach a problem by forming a hypothesis and testing it systematically
  • An appetite for data: you find patterns in large datasets interesting, not overwhelming
  • Clear written and verbal communication: your analysis is only as good as your ability to explain it
  • Ability to travel internationally as needed
