What is a freelance job?

Freelance jobs are work opportunities where individuals are self-employed and offer their services to clients on a project or contract basis, rather than working as an employee for a single company. Freelancers typically work for multiple clients and have the flexibility to choose their assignments and set their own schedules. These jobs can be found in many fields, including writing, graphic design, web development, consulting, and more. Freelancers are responsible for managing their own taxes, contracts, and business operations. The rise of online platforms has made it easier for freelancers to connect with clients around the world.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance professional?

To thrive as a Freelance Professional, you need expertise in your chosen field, a strong portfolio, and the ability to manage projects independently. Familiarity with collaboration tools (such as Slack, Trello, or Zoom), invoicing software, and digital marketing platforms is often essential. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and effective client communication are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are vital for consistently delivering quality work, building client relationships, and sustaining a successful freelance business.

What are some common challenges freelancers face in managing multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelancers often juggle several clients at once, which can lead to challenges such as balancing competing deadlines, maintaining clear communication, and ensuring consistent quality across projects. Effective time management and organizational skills are crucial to prioritize tasks and avoid burnout. Many freelancers use project management tools and set clear expectations with clients to help streamline workflows and maintain professional relationships.

What is the difference between Freelance Job vs Part-Time Job?

AspectFreelance JobPart-Time Job
Work ArrangementProject-based, flexible scheduleFixed hours per week, regular schedule
Employer RelationshipIndependent contractor, multiple clientsEmployer-employee relationship, one employer
CredentialsSkills-based, often self-taught or certifiedMay require specific certifications or experience
Work EnvironmentRemote or client-site, varies per projectTypically on-site or in a fixed location

Freelance jobs offer flexibility and independence, allowing professionals to work on various projects for different clients. Part-time jobs provide a consistent schedule with a single employer, often with benefits. Both options suit different work preferences and career goals, but they differ mainly in structure, stability, and work environment.

What jobs can I do in freelancing?

Freelance jobs encompass a wide range of fields including writing, graphic design, web development, programming, digital marketing, photography, translation, and consulting. Freelancers typically work independently, often using online platforms to find clients and manage projects, and may require specific skills, tools, or certifications depending on the job type.

Job description

About the opportunity

St. George Direct is a growing local news and community media brand serving St. George and Southern Utah. Weโ€™re looking for a local freelance writer and contributor who notices the stories other people walk pastโ€”and can turn them into articles locals genuinely want to read.

This is a freelance contract role, not a generic content-writing position. The work is flexible and primarily independent, but you must know the area and be available to gather local information, photos, or interviews when a story calls for it.

What youโ€™ll do

โ€ข Pitch and write your own approved local story ideas

โ€ข Complete topics assigned by the St. George Direct team

โ€ข Conduct light research and verify key information

โ€ข Interview local sources or gather comments when needed

โ€ข Write clear, engaging articles of approximately 500โ€“800 words

โ€ข Provide sourced or original photos when available

โ€ข Meet agreed deadlines and communicate reliably

Possible story topics

You might cover local business openings and closures, community events, public safety, local history, neighborhood issues, unusual stories, current conversations, thoughtful opinion pieces, or creative angles on serious subjects.

Weโ€™re especially interested in writers who can spot the question behind the obvious headline: Why is this happening? Who does it affect? What detail will make a local reader stop scrolling and keep reading?

Who would be a great fit

You live in or closely understand St. George and Southern Utah. Youโ€™re curious, dependable, comfortable asking questions, and able to write with both accuracy and personality. You can find an original angle instead of simply repeating information.

Journalism or professional writing experience is helpful, but it is not the only thing we value. Strong writing samples, local knowledge, sound judgment, responsiveness, and a genuine interest in the community matter just as much.

Compensation

โ€ข $50 per approved article that you research and develop independently

โ€ข $30 per assigned article

โ€ข An additional $50 performance bonus for any article that reaches 2,500 or more website visits

This is a per-article freelance arrangement rather than a salaried or hourly position.

What St. George Direct handles

We take care of formatting, WordPress publishing, and distribution. Published stories may be promoted through social media, community groups, and other channels, allowing you to focus on reporting and writing.

For the right contributor, this could become an ongoing relationship with a consistent rhythm of story assignments. There may also be opportunities to develop recurring columns, themed features, or creative local series.

St. George Direct is preparing to launch a local app featuring news and deals, so this is an exciting time to help shape what our growing audience reads next.

How to apply

Apply through LinkedIn with a brief introduction, relevant writing samples, and two or three local story ideas you would be excited to pursue. Weโ€™d love to hear what you notice about Southern Utah that deserves a closer look.
