Freelance Integration Software Engineer information

What is a freelance integration software engineer?

A Freelance Integration Software Engineer is an independent professional who specializes in connecting and combining different software systems so they can work together seamlessly. They are typically hired on a project basis to develop, implement, and maintain integrations between applications, databases, APIs, and other digital services. These engineers ensure data flows smoothly across platforms, streamline business processes, and resolve compatibility issues. Freelancers in this role often work remotely and serve multiple clients across industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance integration software engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance Integration Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript), experience with APIs, and a solid understanding of system integration concepts, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with integration platforms (such as MuleSoft, Dell Boomi, or Zapier), cloud services, and relevant certifications (like MuleSoft Certified Developer or AWS Certified Solutions Architect) is highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time-management skills help you collaborate with clients and efficiently deliver solutions in a freelance environment. These capabilities are essential to ensure seamless connectivity between systems, deliver high-quality client solutions, and manage projects independently.

What are some common challenges a freelance integration software engineer might face when working with multiple clients?

Freelance Integration Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing different client expectations, working with diverse technology stacks, and aligning integration standards across various systems. Since each client may use unique tools and workflows, adaptability and strong communication skills are essential to ensure seamless integration. Additionally, coordinating with remote development teams and adhering to project timelines can be demanding, but these experiences also help build a versatile skill set and professional reputation.

What is the difference between Freelance Integration Software Engineer vs Freelance Software Developer?

Job description

Summary

Blue Orb is a U.S. based company that creates responsible utility and infrastructure development opportunities throughout the world to conserve natural resources, preserve communities, and create extraordinary capital returns.  Inside those opportunities we create, sponsor, fund, and execute renewable power projects to completion. The result is a measurable impact with integrity and at scale for all stakeholders – our investors, the flora and fauna of local environments, communities, and all counter-parties in our projects.

Mission: Our mission is to leave those we serve positioned for sustainability and equity in three dimensions: ecology, community, and economy.

Accountability

The Integration Engineer is accountable for designing, building, and maintaining a unified coordination layer that connects a portfolio of 10–15 strategic projects. This role is responsible for wiring together Claude (LLM), ClickUp (project management), Outlook (calendar) into a cohesive, maintainable system — enabling seamless planning, adjustment, and execution of workflows with minimal friction.

The Integration Software Engineer will take full ownership of the custom MCP server, automation flows, authentication infrastructure, and documentation, and will be expected to evolve the system over time as needs change.

Duties / Responsibilities

    • MCP Server Development: Design and build a custom MCP server (Node.js or Python) that exposes scoped Outlook, ClickUp, and actions to Claude — incorporating dry-run modes, audit logging, and configurable parameters that respect defined weekly preferences.
    • Automation Flow Engineering: Develop and maintain Power Automate or n8n flows to enable event-driven synchronization across ClickUp and Outlook with robust failure handling and recovery logic.
    • Authentication and Secrets Management: Implement and manage secure authentication for Microsoft Graph (multi-tenant: personal M365 and Blue Orb tenant), ClickUp API, and SQL ensuring appropriate scoped permissions and compliance with security best practices.
    • Monitoring and Alerting: Establish monitoring and alerting infrastructure to proactively identify and surface system failures before they impact daily operations.
    • Documentation and Knowledge Transfer: Maintain current, comprehensive documentation of all systems, configurations, and processes — sufficient for a successor engineer to assume ownership without knowledge transfer from the incumbent.
    • System Evolution and Maintenance: Develop a deep understanding of the principal's workflows and operational preferences, and continuously evolve the integration stack to support changing needs over the long term.
    • Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate regularly with the principal's assistant and Blue Orb's Project Manager for Operations and Technology, to ensure the system supports cross-functional needs.
    • On-Call Responsiveness: Acknowledge and remediate critical system failures (e.g., calendar write errors, MCP downtime) within four hours during business days.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS

    • Demonstrated, production-grade proficiency in Node.js or Python.
    • Experience self-hosting MCP servers on platforms such as Fly.io, Railway, or Cloudflare Workers.
    • Hands-on experience with the MCP/Anthropic tool-use ecosystem, including building or substantively contributing to an MCP server.
    • Proven experience working with the Microsoft Graph API for Outlook, including calendar creation, updates, deletions, and multi-tenant authentication.
    • Demonstrated competency in REST API integration, including correct handling of rate limits, retries, and pagination.
    • Security-first mindset, with a clear understanding of why calendar-write tooling requires scoped permissions and audit logging.

Required Skills and Abilities

    • Deep technical expertise in API integration across complex, multi-system environments.
    • Experience creating custom MCPs that call MS365 from Claude.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve integration failures efficiently.
    • Meticulous documentation practices — capable of producing written materials that are clear, current, and maintainable by others.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to interface clearly with a non-technical principal and translate operational needs into technical specifications.
    • Ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams with precision and minimal supervision.
    • Professional, resourceful, and proactive mindset — identifies issues before they escalate.
    • Collaborative and adaptable; comfortable working as an independent contributor within a small, dynamic team.
    • Demonstrated commitment to producing clean, maintainable code over rapid, brittle delivery.
    • Committed to long-term engagement — the right candidate will remain with this role for years, not months.
    • Impeccable integrity with respect to time management, on-call responsiveness, and system reliability.
    • Must be available for a weekly 30-minute synchronization; responsive via WhatsApp, Slack or email on an ad-hoc basis.
• Must remain reachable by telephone during business hours (8:30 am to 5:00 pm EST)
    • Must have access to reliable internet with a minimum bandwidth of 3 Mbps.
    • Must have a dedicated work computer capable of supporting a professional development environment.

Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with the ClickUp API.
    • Familiarity with Power Automate or n8n automation platforms.
    • Experience self-hosting MCP servers on platforms such as Fly.io, Railway, or Cloudflare Workers.
    • Prior experience providing technical support to non-technical operators in a day-to-day capacity.
