Freelance Ic Layout Engineer information

What is a freelance IC layout engineer?

A Freelance IC Layout Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing the physical layout of integrated circuits (ICs) on a contract or project basis, rather than as a full-time employee. Their work involves translating circuit schematics into detailed layouts that can be manufactured on semiconductor wafers. Freelance IC Layout Engineers often collaborate with design teams remotely, using specialized software to ensure the layout meets design rules, performance, and reliability requirements. They typically work with various clients and projects, providing flexibility and expertise in the semiconductor industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance IC layout engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance IC Layout Engineer, you need a solid background in semiconductor physics, analog/digital circuit layout principles, and relevant engineering education, often with a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency in industry-standard EDA tools like Cadence Virtuoso, Mentor Graphics, and knowledge of DRC/LVS verification processes is crucial. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you deliver precise layouts and collaborate with remote teams or clients. These competencies are vital for ensuring high-quality, manufacturable IC designs that meet strict specifications and project deadlines.

What are some common challenges freelance IC layout engineers face when working with remote clients?

Freelance IC Layout Engineers often encounter challenges such as effectively communicating design specifications, managing different time zones, and ensuring clear version control during project collaboration. Since much of the work is highly detail-oriented and requires frequent feedback, establishing a structured workflow and leveraging collaborative design tools is essential. Additionally, freelancers may need to proactively clarify requirements and maintain documentation to prevent misunderstandings that could delay project timelines.

What is the difference between Freelance Ic Layout Engineer vs Freelance PCB Designer?

AspectFreelance Ic Layout EngineerFreelance PCB Designer
CredentialsKnowledge of IC design, semiconductor fabricationKnowledge of PCB design, electronic schematics
Work EnvironmentTypically in semiconductor or integrated circuit companies, sometimes freelanceElectronics manufacturing, consulting, or freelance projects
Industry UsageUsed in semiconductor industry, integrated circuit developmentUsed in electronics product development, consumer electronics
Search & Comparison IntentComparing IC layout skills with PCB design expertise

Freelance Ic Layout Engineers focus on designing the physical layout of integrated circuits, often requiring specialized knowledge of semiconductor processes. Freelance PCB Designers create printed circuit boards for electronic devices, emphasizing schematic translation and component placement. While both roles involve electronic design, they serve different stages of product development and require distinct skill sets.

Job description

Now is an exciting time to join our team as we continue to change the industry through experience in technology development, full-custom ASIC and electronics development across the Semiconductor, Medical and Defense industries, including some of the most challenging fabrication processes and product applications. We are always looking for talented and dedicated IC Design Professionals to join our organization.

Position: IC Layout Manager (Analog/Mixed Signal)

Location: Richardson, TX

Job Id: 317

# of Openings: 1

About IC Enable

For over 20 years, IC Enable has delivered high-reliability design IP, IC products, and platform solutions to customers ranging from fast-moving startups to Fortune 50 companies. Our work spans mixed-signal and digital IC design, with deep expertise in full-custom ASIC/SoC development across semiconductor, medical, and defense applications—often in some of the industry’s most demanding process nodes and use cases. We’re growing—and looking for a senior layout / mask design leader who can own critical pieces of complex silicon development and raise the bar for execution across our team.

At IC Enable, we approach every challenge with a startup mindset—nimble, relentless, and unwilling to accept limits. No task is too complex or too ambitious; we take ownership, solve hard problems, and push forward as we continue building something bigger than ourselves.

The Role

As a Mixed-Signal and Analog IC Layout Manager, you will take ownership of chip-level layout execution and verification for high-performance, full-custom ICs. This is a hands‑on leadership role: you’ll drive layout quality, guide best practices, and collaborate closely with design, verification, and customer teams to deliver first-pass success on challenging designs.

Location: Richardson, TX (Hybrid: 3 days onsite)

What You’ll Do
  • Lead chip-level layout integration across analog, digital, and IP blocks
  • Own full‑chip physical verification: DRC, LVS, EM/IR, parasitic extraction, and density compliance
  • Drive layout quality, consistency, and adherence to foundry requirements
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (design, CAD, verification) across global locations
  • Review and interpret layout specifications to ensure accuracy and performance alignment
  • Mentor junior layout engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of layout methodologies
What You Bring
  • 10+ years of hands‑on IC layout experience, with significant exposure to mixed-signal designs
  • Proven track record delivering complex, full-custom chips to tape‑out
  • Deep expertise with industry-standard tools: Cadence Virtuoso or Synopsys Custom Compiler, and physical verification tools such as Calibre, PVS, or IC Validator
  • Strong experience with LVS, DRC, and chip‑level verification flows
  • Solid understanding of semiconductor manufacturing processes and design rules
  • High attention to detail and ability to work effectively under tight timelines
  • Strong communication skills, with experience working directly with internal teams and external customers
  • Must comply with all applicable International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements (Requires U.S. Persons). Due to the nature of the work and access to export-controlled information, applicants must be authorized to access ITAR-restricted data in accordance with U.S. export control laws and regulations.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience (Associate degree with significant industry experience considered)
Why IC Enable

We hire people who are humble, driven, and highly capable—and give them the opportunity to work on technically challenging, meaningful designs. You’ll be part of a team that values ownership, precision, and continuous growth.

Benefits include:
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, and supplemental coverage
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Collaborative, engineering-focused culture
Equal Opportunity Employer

IC Enable is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team.
