What is a freelance high frequency trading software engineer?

A Freelance High Frequency Trading (HFT) Software Engineer is an independent professional who designs, develops, and maintains trading algorithms and systems for high frequency trading firms or clients. They specialize in creating software that can execute trades at extremely high speeds, often within microseconds, and handle large volumes of data. Their role typically includes optimizing code for low latency, ensuring system reliability, and implementing complex trading strategies. Freelance HFT engineers work on a contract basis, allowing them to serve multiple clients or projects rather than being tied to a single employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance high frequency trading software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance High Frequency Trading (HFT) Software Engineer, you need advanced programming skills (C++, Python, or Java), deep knowledge of algorithms, and a strong background in mathematics or computer science. Experience with low-latency systems, network optimization, and familiarity with industry-standard trading platforms or certifications like CFA can be highly valuable. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and strong communication skills help you collaborate with clients and respond quickly to changing requirements. These skills are essential for building robust, high-performance trading systems that compete effectively in fast-moving financial markets.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance high frequency trading software engineers when working with clients remotely?

Freelance HFT software engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning with clients' rapidly evolving trading strategies and ensuring low-latency performance under stringent requirements. Communication can be complex due to the highly technical and confidential nature of HFT algorithms, necessitating clear documentation and secure collaboration tools. Additionally, freelancers must adapt quickly to diverse technology stacks and exchange APIs, while efficiently coordinating with quantitative analysts, traders, and IT support teams who may be located in different time zones.

Salary Range: Up to $200k base + bonus
Locations: New York City, Chicago or Austin
My client is a tech-focused market-maker with groundbreaking success in the high frequency trading space, looking to hire Software Engineers for their HFT team focused on designing, improving and executing fully automated trading strategies using machine learning.
In this role, you'll own complex technical projects and help shape the direction of the trading infrastructure. As a software engineer at this firm, you'll work on some of the most challenging algorithmic problems in the world. The team owns the problem end to end - from data to simulation to the execution of orders in production - and the system is built to be robust, enabling research at scale while running complex ML models with low latency across thousands of financial instruments.
If you relish the challenges of an extremely fast-paced environment where your work will make a tangible impact from day one, this is the role for you!
Skills and Experience Required
  • 2+ years preferred of C++ experience in low-latency systems, such as market data ingestion, order routing, execution performance, or simulation frameworks
  • Strong engineering instincts plus a deep understanding of computer science fundamentals
  • Expertise in C++ is strongly preferred; experience with C, Python or Linux is a plus
  • Innovative, out-of-the-box thinking grounded in real-world pragmatism
  • Readiness to set technical direction, promote engineering principles, and do the right thing
  • Candidates must have US citizenship/Greencard or a valid H1B/TN Visa

NB: please do not apply if you're a fresh graduate.
Benefits
  • Incredible salary + profit-sharing structure
  • Truly flat structure and highly collaborative culture, within a fun, stimulating office environment
  • Direct business impact with short feedback loop
  • Outstanding benefits package
