Freelance Greeting Card Design focuses on creating visually appealing card layouts for various occasions, often requiring graphic design skills. Freelance Illustration covers a wider range of artistic work, including detailed drawings and artwork for multiple industries. While both roles involve creativity and digital tools, greeting card designers specialize in short, themed projects, whereas illustrators may handle diverse, complex illustrations for different media.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance greeting card designer?

To thrive as a Freelance Greeting Card Designer, you need strong artistic ability, creativity, and proficiency in graphic design, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and digital illustration tools is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to interpret client briefs set standout designers apart. These skills are crucial for creating appealing, marketable designs that meet client needs and deadlines in a competitive freelance environment.

What does a freelance greeting card designer do?

A freelance greeting card designer creates original artwork and messages for greeting cards on a project or contract basis, rather than working as a staff designer for a single company. They may design cards for various occasions like birthdays, holidays, or special events, often working with publishers, stationery companies, or selling designs directly online. This role involves concept development, illustration or graphic design, and sometimes writing the card's message. Freelance designers often manage their own client relationships, portfolios, and business operations as well.

What are some common challenges freelance greeting card designers face when working with clients?

Freelance greeting card designers often encounter challenges such as balancing client expectations with their own creative vision, meeting tight deadlines—especially around holidays—and adapting to various brand styles. Communication is key, as clients may have specific requirements for themes, colors, or messaging. Additionally, freelancers must handle revisions professionally and manage multiple projects simultaneously, which requires strong organizational skills and time management.

Job description

About Us:
Perpay is a certified B Corp and Philadelphia's most impactful growth-stage startup. We are driven by a mission to significantly improve the financial stability of everyday Americans. For the past decade, we have established strong product-market fit and a profitable, efficient operating model across a suite of products, positioning Perpay as the premier financial partner for consumers with subprime credit.
With over 500,000 customers who have utilized more than $1 billion in spending power, we are at a pivotal moment. We are scaling our operations, building new offerings, and deepening our impact. We are looking for teammates eager to join us on this journey.
Our venture partners include First Round Capital and L Catterton.
Products we've built to make an impact:
  • Perpay Marketplace: Combines interest-free payments and modern e-commerce to reduce cost of ownership and promote healthy repayment behavior.
  • Perpay+: Leverages Marketplace repayment history to help members monitor and build credit with all 3 credit bureaus.
  • Perpay Credit Card: Expands access to the flexibility and benefits of a World Mastercard by removing common barriers like high security deposits and low approval odds.

Our team thrives on in-person collaboration, operating from our unique center-city Philadelphia office. This comfortable "home away from home" space offers river views and fosters rapid product development, strong relationships, and career growth. The energy from achieving big wins is palpable here. While we primarily work in the office, we offer sensible flexibility for personal needs, such as sick children or urgent errands, and coordinate official remote weeks around major holidays. If you are passionate about a meaningful mission, collaboration, equity, and generous perks, Perpay is the best place to be in Philadelphia right now.
Job Description
We're looking for an early-career (or equivalent experience) Product Designer to join our small, but mighty, design team. You'll play a key role in shaping the customer experience at Perpay-bringing design thinking, strong visuals, and motion skills to the table. If you're equal parts product thinker and pixel perfectionist, and you thrive in fast-moving, hands-on environments, we want to hear from you.
What You'll Do
  • Contribute to design projects that directly impact our customers' financial lives
  • Apply design thinking methodologies to solve user and business problems
  • Collaborate with product, engineering, brand, and marketing partners to ship experiences that are useful, beautiful, and on-brand
  • Bring designs to life through high-quality visual work, motion design, and attention to micro-interactions
  • Support research initiatives by contributing to planning, synthesizing insights, and applying findings to your designs
  • Uphold and apply our design system and visual language across platforms
  • Take initiative and drive work forward even when things are ambiguous-we're looking for someone with grit and a hustle mentality
What We're Looking For
  • 0-2 years of experience in product design (internships, freelance, or academic projects all count!)
  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates both product thinking and visual craft
  • Graphic design and motion design skills-bonus if you've worked on marketing assets or brand-related design
  • A desire to grow within a collaborative team and openness to feedback
  • A builder's mindset-you're excited to own problems and turn ideas into shipped solutions
  • Comfortable working with established design systems, while knowing when to stretch them
  • Deep understanding of design and prototyping tools (Figma, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence tools that a designer can leverage
  • Passion for our purpose of creating access to credit and helping our customers build credit

What We'll Bring to Full-time Team Members:
  • Meaningful compensation and equity
  • Premium medical benefits (fully paid base plan, and very reasonable premium for the buy-up option)
  • 4% employer 401k match
  • Unlimited PTO policy
  • Remote weeks around major holidays + extra holiday on weekends like MDW and LDW
  • High quality catered lunch by local chefs, 4 days / week
  • Gym subsidy
  • Paid cell phone + plan
  • Student loan repayment program
  • Relocation assistance
  • Generous team member discounts
