What is a Freelance Game Science Studio?

A Freelance Game Science Studio is an independent business or group of professionals specializing in game design, development, and research, often with a focus on applying principles from game science. These studios typically work on a project-by-project basis for various clients, helping create, analyze, or improve games using scientific methods and data-driven approaches. They may offer services like game mechanics design, user experience testing, educational game development, or consulting for game-based learning. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance game designer in a game science studio, and why are they important?

To excel as a freelance game designer in a game science studio, you need strong skills in game mechanics, systems design, and an understanding of player psychology, usually supported by a portfolio or relevant degree. Familiarity with game engines like Unity or Unreal, version control tools, and sometimes certifications in game development are typically required. Creativity, communication, and project management are essential soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and clients. These abilities ensure the creation of engaging, well-balanced games while meeting project goals and client expectations.

Can you be a freelance game developer?

What are some common challenges freelance game developers face when working with game science studios?

Freelance game developers collaborating with game science studios often encounter challenges such as aligning with the studio's design philosophy, managing communication across distributed teams, and adapting to rapid changes in project scope or priorities. Effective time management and proactive communication are essential for meeting deadlines and ensuring your work integrates smoothly with the broader team.

Can you get paid for making games?

Payment depends on project scope, client agreements, and the quality of work, often requiring skills in programming, design, and game engines like Unity or Unreal. Freelancers typically negotiate rates and payment terms before starting projects.

  • Support business narratives and develop business cases with effective data storytelling. Focus on using data and hypothesis-driven decision-making to drive future growth and customer lifetime value

  • Learn different business teams' and stakeholders' ways of working and preferences for understanding data, and be a bridge between the data team and business teams (Product, Marketing, Commercial) to translate complex business needs into data-related projects

  • Flexibly deliver different types of output to match stakeholder needs, including reports, visualizations, charts, and tables

  • Gain an understanding of internal titles outside of our portfolio (NBA 2K, Borderlands, other 2K titles) to provide strong benchmarking and comparison points for business performance

  • Drive the exploration of creative new ways of measurement to identify patterns and causal relationships

  • Empower teams to track and analyze activity/productivity and support their research projects, leading the efforts towards building scalable self-service tools

  • Data doesn't just appear overnight, we work with our stakeholders to understand what data matters most to their business and strategy. In addition to delivering insights on what is available to us, this role will be responsible for liaising with stakeholders to proactively identify what data we need to begin to record for future initiatives that drive value

Who We Think Will Be a Great Fit

The ideal candidate for this role has the ability to see the underlying story in the data and know how to ask the right questions. A solution-oriented and creative problem solver. A self-starter with the passion and enthusiasm to join a growing insights team to get results for meaningful change.

Qualifications:
