What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Film Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Film Editor, you need strong storytelling abilities, technical proficiency in video editing, and a solid understanding of pacing and continuity, often supported by a background in film or media studies. Mastery of industry-standard software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve is typically required, along with familiarity with various video and audio formats. Excellent communication, time management, and creative problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively with clients and deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines. These skills ensure you can consistently produce compelling edits that meet client expectations and succeed in a competitive freelance market.

What is freelance film editing?

Freelance film editing is the process of working independently, rather than as a full-time employee, to assemble, cut, and enhance video footage for movies, commercials, web content, or other projects. Freelance film editors are typically hired on a contract basis by production companies, directors, or individual clients to edit raw footage into a cohesive and engaging final product. They use specialized software to arrange scenes, adjust timing, add effects or transitions, and ensure the final video meets the creative vision of the project. Freelance editors often manage their own schedules, negotiate rates, and work remotely, giving them flexibility but also requiring strong self-management skills.

What is the difference between Freelance Film Editing vs Film Editor?

AspectFreelance Film EditingFilm Editor
CredentialsTypically requires editing skills, portfolio, and sometimes film or media educationOften requires formal education in film or media production, with industry experience
Work EnvironmentIndependent, remote or on-location, project-basedEmployed at production companies or studios, working in editing suites
Employer & Industry UsageHired by clients for specific projects, flexible contractsWorks for studios, networks, or production companies as part of a team

Freelance Film Editing involves independent professionals working on various projects for different clients, offering flexibility and diverse experience. In contrast, a Film Editor is typically employed by a company or studio, working within a structured environment. Both roles require strong editing skills, but the freelance role emphasizes self-management and client relations, while the employed editor focuses on collaborative workflows within an organization.

How do freelance film editors typically manage feedback and revisions from multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelance film editors often juggle projects for different clients, each with their own feedback cycles and revision requests. To manage this efficiently, editors use project management tools, clear communication channels, and set expectations upfront regarding revision rounds and turnaround times. Staying organized and responsive is crucial, as is maintaining detailed notes on client preferences and project changes. Successful editors build strong client relationships by being adaptable and proactive in addressing feedback while meeting deadlines.

Job description

We are looking for an Assistant Editor Intern to join our Film and TV post production team for a hands-on educational training internship focused on professional editorial support workflows.
This internship is designed for students interested in post production, editing, media management, and assistant editor work. Interns will begin within a controlled sandbox training project before supporting any active client work, giving them the opportunity to learn real-world AE workflows in a lower-risk, supervised environment.
Interns will gain exposure to the full post production support process, including media ingest, project organization, footage stringouts, ingest reports, Frame.io dailies links, transcriptions, captions, prep for color and mix, exports, deliverables, QC, and project wrap.
This is a great opportunity for someone who is organized, detail-oriented, curious about post production, and interested in learning how professional editorial teams move projects from footage intake through final delivery.
Educational Structure
This internship is structured as a learning-focused training experience. Interns will receive guidance, feedback, and supervision throughout the program. Any exposure to active client work will be limited, supervised, and based on the intern's training progress.
Completion of the internship does not guarantee future employment, though interns may be considered for future freelance or entry-level opportunities if there is a good fit and a business need.
Responsibilities
  • Learn professional post production workflows from ingest through delivery
  • Assist with media ingest and project organization within a training environment
  • Learn proper folder structures and file naming conventions
  • Create footage stringouts for review
  • Help prepare ingest reports and track project assets
  • Learn Frame.io dailies upload and review workflows
  • Support transcription and caption workflows
  • Learn basic prep steps for color, mix, exports, and deliverables
  • Support QC and project wrap/archive workflows
  • Follow internal post production processes and checklists
  • Communicate clearly when questions or issues come up
  • Participate in check-ins, feedback sessions, and workflow reviews

Qualifications
  • Current student studying film, media, production, editing, communications, or a related field
  • Interest in post production and assistant editor workflows
  • Basic familiarity with Adobe Premiere Pro preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
  • Comfortable following technical instructions and checklists
  • Good communication and follow-through
  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, and receive feedback
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality around client and project materials

Time Commitment
10-15 hours per week preferred, with some flexibility based on school credit requirements and student availability.
The internship will be structured around a defined semester or training period and will take student academic schedules into consideration.
Location
Franklin, TN
Compensation / Credit
This internship may be eligible for academic credit depending on the student's school requirements. Students are encouraged to confirm credit eligibility with their academic department or career center.
Please note: this internship is designed as an educational training experience. Any compensation details, if applicable, will be confirmed during the application/interview process.
Application Materials
Please submit:
  • Resume
  • Short note of interest
  • Availability for the semester
  • Editing samples or reel, if available, but not required

About the Opportunity
This internship is intended to give students a practical understanding of how assistant editors support professional post production teams. The goal is to help interns build foundational AE skills, understand real-world post workflows, and gain experience in a supervised, training-focused environment.
