A Freelance Exhibition Design job involves creating engaging and functional exhibition spaces for trade shows, museums, galleries, and events. Freelancers in this field work independently with clients to design layouts, select materials, and coordinate visual elements that enhance the visitor experience. They often collaborate with architects, graphic designers, and event planners to bring concepts to life. This role requires creativity, spatial planning skills, and knowledge of industry trends to produce compelling and effective displays.

What does a freelance exhibition designer do?

A Freelance Exhibition Designer's daily responsibilities often include meeting with clients to understand their vision, developing layout concepts and 3D renderings, creating detailed technical drawings, and collaborating with contractors, fabricators, and graphic artists. Designers are usually involved in both the creative and logistical aspects, managing timelines, budgets, and the coordination of installation schedules. Workdays can vary depending on project phases, sometimes requiring on-site supervision during setup or close client communication for feedback rounds. This variety offers dynamic work but also requires strong organizational skills and adaptability to ever-changing project needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in freelance exhibition design?

To thrive as a Freelance Exhibition Designer, you need a strong background in spatial design, graphic design, and an understanding of visitor flow, often supported by a degree in design, architecture, or a related field. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, and 3D rendering tools is typically required. Exceptional project management, client-communication, and creative problem-solving abilities are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that exhibitions are visually effective, logistically feasible, and meet the unique needs of diverse clients within tight timelines.

Job description

We are Guggenheim, a global constellation of museums unlike any other in the world. Four museums on three continents, united by the power of groundbreaking art to connect us to ourselves and to each other. Since our founding in 1937, the Guggenheim has introduced, celebrated and brought to the public the newest voices and visions in modern and contemporary art. When Solomon R. Guggenheim and Hilla Rebay set out to share the joy they first experienced in discovering experimental art, they initiated the creative risk-taking that is today synonymous with “Guggenheim” throughout the world. Across the globe, each Guggenheim stands not just as a backdrop for visionary art but as masterpieces in and of themselves to experience.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum seeks an emerging designer to join its Brand Design team. This role extends beyond traditional graphic design to help shape the museum's visitor experience across exhibitions, marketing, environmental graphics, digital products, and institutional initiatives. Working within an interdisciplinary team, the Graphic Designer creates visual communications that connect audiences with the Guggenheim through thoughtful, engaging, and accessible design. The ideal candidate is passionate about typography, storytelling, architecture, technology, and contemporary culture, and eager to grow within one of the world's leading museums.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects), Figma, and Microsoft 365.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills.
  • Experience in museums and cultural institutions.
  • Knowledge of environmental graphic design, accessibility standards, motion graphics, and basic front-end workflows (HTML/CSS).
  • Successful designer will think beyond individual deliverables to create cohesive brand experiences across physical and digital touchpoints.
  • Must be a collaborative, detail-oriented, curious, and committed to exceptional craft, bringing creativity and thoughtful problem-solving to projects of every scale.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design brand communications across print, digital, environmental, and social media.
  • Support exhibition graphics, wayfinding, title walls, donor recognition, and other environmental graphics.
  • Contribute to visitor experiences, public activations, partnerships, and experiential design projects.
  • Design digital assets, wireframes, and UI layouts using Figma, applying user-centered and accessible design principles.
  • Prepare production-ready files for print, fabrication, motion, and digital publishing.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Curatorial, Editorial, Marketing, Communications, Visitor Experience, Retail, Exhibition Design, and external creative partners.
WORK DEMANDS and ENVIRONMENT
  • Ability to travel within the metropolitan area as required to perform the above duties at any of the Guggenheim’s owned or leased properties upon request.
  • Occasionally work may be conducted outdoors, exposure to varied weather conditions.
