What is a freelance EV charger installer?

Freelance EV Charger Installers are independent professionals who specialize in setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging stations for homes, businesses, or public spaces. Unlike those who work for a single company, freelancers operate independently, often taking on various projects for different clients. They handle tasks such as site assessment, electrical wiring, charger installation, testing, and sometimes maintenance. Freelance installers must be knowledgeable about electrical codes, safety standards, and the different types of EV chargers. Many also help clients choose the right charger for their vehicle and location.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a freelance EV charger installer?

To thrive as a Freelance EV Charger Installer, you need strong electrical knowledge, relevant trade qualifications or licensure, and experience with wiring and power systems. Familiarity with EV charging station brands, installation manuals, and safety codes, as well as certifications like the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program (EVITP), are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and customer service skills help installers work independently and build client trust. These competencies ensure safe, code-compliant installations and foster a positive reputation in a rapidly growing industry.

What challenges do freelance EV charger installers face and how can they prepare for them?

Freelance EV charger installers often encounter varying site conditions, such as outdated electrical systems or limited space, which can complicate installations. Additionally, staying updated with local regulations and permitting requirements can be a challenge, as these may differ by region and change frequently. To prepare, it's helpful to conduct thorough site assessments beforehand, maintain up-to-date certifications, and build strong communication with clients and local authorities. Networking with other installers and joining professional groups also provides support and access to the latest industry updates.

Job description

Build what moves the future

Help electrify transportation across Los Angeles with a company that’s spent more than a decade leading EV charger deployments nationwide. Here, electricians own the craft—from install to maintenance handoff—without the burden of supervising crews or owning project timelines.

Your impact

Bring EV charging sites online by installing and commissioning EVSE, running EMT and underground conduit, pulling and terminating wire, and dialing in performance across 208V, 240V, and 480V systems. You’ll read blueprints and one‑line diagrams instinctively and be the steady hand others look to when details get tricky.

Rewards
  • $40+ per hour to start, based on experience
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Retirement savings plan
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
What it takes
  • Active Certified Electrician status through California DIR
  • At least 4 years of electrical experience
  • Confidence working in energized panels and installing breakers with proper safety protocols
  • Strong command of NEC Article 625 for EV charging installations
  • Valid driver’s license and a reliable personal vehicle
  • Ability to travel throughout LA and nearby counties; occasional overnight or weekend work depending on the project
Technical strengths
  • 120/208/240/480 voltage systems
  • EV Charger Installation (EVSE)
  • Electrical schematic and one‑line diagram reading
Why this role

Meaningful, skilled electrical work in a booming industry—without the headaches of crew supervision. If that’s your ideal, we’d like to hear from you.
