Job Objective:

The Counselor provides confidential mental health services to students within a comprehensive College Wellness Center. This role delivers short-term individual counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention, outreach programming, and consultation services in support of student wellbeing and academic success. The Counselor collaborates closely with medical providers and campus partners to provide integrated, holistic care.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Services

  • Provide brief, goal-oriented individual counseling to a diverse college student population
  • Conduct intake assessments, biopsychosocial evaluations, and develop treatment plans
  • Facilitate therapy and psychoeducational groups
  • Provide crisis intervention, risk assessment, and safety planning
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and ethical clinical documentation in the electronic health record

Crisis Response & Risk Management

  • Assess and manage students presenting with acute mental health concerns, including suicidality and other safety risks
  • Participate in campus behavioral intervention or threat assessment processes as appropriate
  • Consult with campus partners regarding student mental health concerns
  • Participate in an assigned on-call rotation to provide after-hours mental health consultation and crisis support.

Outreach, Prevention, and Education

  • Develop and deliver workshops, trainings, and wellness programming
  • Creates marketing materials and social media content to promote the student wellness
  • Participate in campus-wide wellness initiatives and special events
  • Contribute to prevention and early intervention efforts targeting common college mental health concerns

Collaboration & Administrative Responsibilities

  • Participate in case consultation and team meetings
  • Collaborate with medical providers to support integrated care
  • Maintain compliance with professional ethical standards and institutional policies
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives and quality improvement efforts within the Wellness Center
  • Opportunity to provide supervision to graduate student counselors (as appropriate)
The approved salary for this position is: $48,000.00/annuallyRequirements:

Qualifications


Required:

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related mental health discipline
  • Current, active licensure in New York state as LMHC, LMSW, LCSW, LPC, Psychologist, or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience providing individual therapy in a clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated competency in risk assessment and crisis intervention

Preferred:

  • Experience in a college or university counseling center
  • Experience facilitating therapy groups
  • Training in evidence-based or skills-based interventions (e.g., CBT, DBT-informed approaches, trauma-informed care)
  • Experience with outreach and prevention programming

Licensure & Compliance

  • Must maintain current professional licensure in good standing in New York state
  • Practice in accordance with applicable state laws, professional ethical codes, and institutional policies

Schedule

  • 40 hours per week, primarily Monday through Friday
  • 1–2 scheduled evening shifts per week to support student access to care
  • Occasional evening or weekend hours for on-call rotation, special event coverage, or campus response needs

Work Environment

  • The Counselor works within a multidisciplinary College Wellness Center and collaborates with medical providers, student affairs professionals, and campus partners.
  • The position requires the ability to manage a fast-paced clinical environment and respond effectively to urgent student needs.
