What is a freelance designer?

A freelance designer is a self-employed creative professional who offers design services to clients on a project-by-project basis, rather than working as a full-time employee for a single company. Freelance designers often specialize in areas like graphic design, web design, branding, or illustration. They have the flexibility to choose their clients, set their own rates, and manage their schedules. Freelance designers are responsible for finding clients, managing contracts, and delivering high-quality design work.

What is a freelance designer?

A freelance designer is a type of self-employed freelancer that works on design projects for business clients. Most freelance designers specialize in a specific field, such as graphic design or web design. While your responsibilities vary from gig to gig, they always revolve around carefully managing your time to complete and deliver client projects by a deadline, and to their exact specifications. You must communicate directly with your clients to figure out the scope of the project and decide on the payment specifics. As with all self-employed jobs, being a freelance designer requires self-motivation and basic knowledge of how to run your own business, along with technical skills in your chosen specialty.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance designer?

To thrive as a Freelance Designer, you need a strong portfolio showcasing proficiency in design principles, creativity, and expertise with visual communication, typically supported by relevant education or self-taught skills. Mastery of industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or Sketch is essential, and certifications in these tools can be advantageous. Excellent time management, client communication, and adaptability help freelancers deliver quality work and build lasting relationships. These skills are crucial for consistently meeting client expectations, managing multiple projects, and sustaining a successful freelance career.

How do freelance designers typically manage client relationships and project expectations?

Freelance designers often juggle multiple clients and projects, making clear communication and expectation-setting essential. They usually establish project scopes, deadlines, and deliverables upfront, often using contracts to formalize agreements. Regular check-ins and updates help maintain transparency and foster trust, while tools like project management software or shared documents can keep both parties aligned. Building strong client relationships not only ensures smoother projects but can also lead to repeat business and referrals.

Both roles require strong design skills and portfolios, but their work settings and employment types differ significantly.

Content Manager

Kenect

Pleasant Grove, UT • Hybrid

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life

Re-posted 13 days ago

Job description

We are seeking a talented, creative, and hands-on Content Manager to join our marketing team in Utah. This is an exciting, early-career opportunity for a versatile creator who wants to be at the absolute forefront of the AI revolution in the dealership space (automotive, RV, powersports, marine, equipment).

Instead of just running traditional marketing playbooks, you will help us tell the compelling story of how modern dealers are implementing AI to transform their businesses. You will act as a key storyteller and a high-velocity content engine-scripting, filming, writing, and designing, while actively leveraging generative AI tools to scale your output. You'll also coordinate with our close-knit marketing team and manage a roster of premier freelance creative partners to scale our production.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Hands-on Content Execution: Produce high-quality content across multiple formats (video, written blogs, one-pagers, case studies) that speaks directly to the needs, pain points, and interests of dealership owners adopting new technologies.
  • AI Workflow Integration: Proactively use AI writing, design, and research tools to brainstorm concepts, draft copy, edit visual assets, and accelerate the overall content creation lifecycle without losing Kenect's unique brand voice.
  • Dealer Storytelling: Interview progressive dealers who are implementing AI, extracting the human-interest and business-impact angles to create highly engaging customer-advocacy content.
  • Contractor & Agency Management: Act as the primary point of contact for our network of freelance creative partners, managing their briefs, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Demand Generation, Product, and Sales to identify content gaps and deliver assets that drive brand engagement and conversion.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Portfolio of Work: A diverse portfolio demonstrating proficiency across multiple content mediums (must include samples of written work like blogs or scripts, and visual work like short-form video production or graphic layouts).
  • AI Content Proficiency: Hands-on experience and comfort using generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney, Canva AI, or AI video/audio editing tools) as a day-to-day force multiplier for content production.
  • Experience: Early-career (minimal formal professional experience is okay!), but you must demonstrate a high degree of creative capability, resourcefulness, and a drive to learn.
  • Technical Aptitude: Experience with video editing software, design tools, and basic CMS/blogging platforms.
  • Industry Context: Experience with or a strong interest in B2B SaaS, AI technologies, or the dealership space (automotive, RV, powersports, marine) is a major plus.
  • Work Style: A proactive, eager-to-learn attitude. You must be comfortable working in a hybrid/in-office structure based in Utah

Company Values

  • Unwavering Customer Obsession
  • See it, Solve it, Get it Done
  • Build, Adapt, Win

Kenect Offers

  • Health, dental, vision, life & disability insurance
  • Paid day off on your birthday
  • Onsite gym
  • Breakroom full of snacks and drinks
  • Convenient location next to freeway entrance/exit
