What is a freelance creative writer?

Freelance creative writers are self-employed professionals who create original written content, such as stories, articles, scripts, poetry, and marketing materials, for various clients or publications. They work independently, often on a project-by-project basis, and may specialize in specific genres or formats. Freelance creative writers manage their own schedules, negotiate contracts, and are responsible for finding and maintaining client relationships. This career offers flexibility and the opportunity to work on diverse projects, but also requires strong self-discipline, creativity, and business skills.

What does a freelance creative writer do?

A freelance creative writer writes informative, motivational, or creative articles or other content for magazines, newspapers, blogs, advertisements, and other forms of print and digital media. In this career, you write on a contract basis, so one of your duties as a freelance creative writer is to develop strong pitches for editors and content managers based on news pegs or current trends. While you can make a career as a freelancer, many creative writers use freelancing as a temporary position to build their portfolio before transitioning into a full-time position with staff responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance creative writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Creative Writer, you need excellent writing, research, and storytelling abilities, typically supported by a strong portfolio of published work. Familiarity with word processing tools, content management systems, and SEO best practices is often required. Creativity, self-discipline, and strong communication skills help writers stand out by consistently delivering engaging content and managing client relationships. These abilities ensure that writers can produce high-quality work, meet deadlines, and build a sustainable freelance business.

How do freelance creative writers typically find and manage their clients and projects?

Freelance Creative Writers often find clients through a mix of online platforms, personal networks, and referrals. Managing multiple projects can be challenging, so writers frequently use project management tools or spreadsheets to track deadlines and deliverables. Building strong relationships with clients and maintaining clear communication are key to securing repeat work. Writers also need to balance creative freedom with client expectations, which makes adaptability and professionalism essential for success.

Job description

We're looking for a talented, creative individual to join our KBP Communications team and help bring our brand to life through impactful visuals and storytelling.

We're seeking a Creative Content Specialist who can transform ideas into engaging graphics, video, and social media content - capturing stories from across our business. This is a hands-on, multi-disciplinary role for someone early in their career who is a true versatile player, equally comfortable with graphic design, video editing, and social strategy.

What You'll Do:

  • Design graphics for internal communications, social media, presentations, and other visual assets while maintaining KBP brand standards across all materials.

  • Build templates and branded assets that make internal communications and presentations easy to update and consistently on brand.

  • Support creative design needs for company initiatives, including recognition programs, KBP Cares, and other corporate events.

  • Edit and produce engaging short-form video content for internal communications and social media, including executive interviews, recap videos, reels, and behind-the-scenes content.

  • Manage the full video production process, including editing, basic color correction, audio, and final delivery using tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or CapCut.

  • Develop and execute content strategies across Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, including managing the content calendar, monitoring performance metrics, and optimizing content based on results.

  • Engage with online audiences by responding to comments and messages while fostering an authentic social media community.

  • Capture photo and video content at company events and provide live event coverage, social media posts, stories, and polished post-event recap content.

  • Write engaging social media captions and other short-form internal communications, including text messages and company announcements, while ensuring content is accurate, on brand, and aligned with KBP's voice.

  • Collaborate across departments to bring company stories to life through compelling visual and written content.

  • Maintain flexibility to support occasional evening or weekend events as business needs require.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Communications, Marketing, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

  • 3+ years of professional experience spanning graphic design, video editing, and/or social media (internships and freelance work count).

  • A true multi-hyphenate creative, comfortable moving between design, video, and social platforms, with hands-on experience in at least two of these disciplines.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or InDesign) for design work.

  • Working knowledge of video editing tools such as Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, CapCut, or similar.

  • Solid writing and copy-editing skills.

  • A portfolio demonstrating range across design and video work is required for consideration.

  • Creative and strategic thinker with the ability to own a plan and execute against it.

  • Strong storytelling instincts across visual, video, and written formats.

  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

  • Comfortable with occasional flexible hours around key events.

  • Experience managing a brand's social media presence, especially growing a following from scratch, is preferred.

  • Familiarity with social scheduling and analytics tools is preferred.

  • Restaurant or franchise business experience is preferred.

What KBP Brings to the Table:

KBP is a leading restaurant franchise group with a clear vision: to be a great place to work, a great place to eat, and a great place to own. We're focused on sustainable growth that creates opportunities for our business and our people. Our Leawood, KS home office supports KFC, Taco Bell, Arby's and Sonic restaurants across the country. It's a dynamic environment where teamwork, learning, and personal growth are part of everyday life.

Compensation: Offers are based on each candidate's experience and qualifications.
