A Freelance Comic Book Artist creates illustrations and visual storytelling elements for comic books, graphic novels, or webcomics on a project-by-project basis. They work independently or with writers and publishers to develop characters, scenes, and sequential art. Responsibilities may include penciling, inking, coloring, and lettering, depending on the artist’s skills. Since it's freelance, they manage their own schedules, negotiate contracts, and often need to market their services to find new clients.

What does a typical project workflow look like for a freelance comic book artist?

A typical project for a Freelance Comic Book Artist starts with discussing the concept and requirements with the client or writer, followed by creating rough sketches (thumbnails) to establish the layout. The artist then progresses to penciling, inking, coloring, and sometimes lettering, depending on the agreed scope of work. Throughout the process, regular communication and revisions are common to ensure the final artwork aligns with the client's vision. Most projects are managed remotely, requiring discipline and organization to meet deadlines, and collaboration often involves feedback from writers, editors, or publishers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the freelance comic book artist position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Comic Book Artist, you need strong illustration skills, a solid grasp of visual storytelling, and knowledge of comic creation techniques—often backed by a portfolio showcasing sequential art. Familiarity with industry-standard digital art software like Adobe Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, or Procreate is typically required, though formal certifications are optional. Effective time management, self-motivation, and the ability to communicate clearly with clients and collaborators are crucial soft skills. Job description

WEBTOON Entertainment is a leading global entertainment company and home to some of the world's largest storytelling platforms. As the global leader and pioneer of the mobile webcomic format, WEBTOON Entertainment has transformed comics and visual storytelling for fans and creators.

With its CANVAS UGC platform empowering anyone to become a creator, and a growing roster of superstar WEBTOON Originals creators and series, WEBTOON Entertainment’s passionate fandoms are the new face of pop culture. WEBTOON Entertainment adaptations are available on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Crunchyroll, and other screens around the world, and the company’s content partners include The Walt Disney Company, HYBE, and DC Comics, among many others.

WEBTOON is becoming the home for Marvel and Disney comics — a new subscription app where fans read, collect, and stay connected to the stories and characters they love. We're building the definitive destination for Marvel/Disney IP, and we're looking for a Sr. Marketing Manager to help it grow. This role reports to the Head of Marketing and will support all aspects of the marketing function with a focus on new marketing campaign development and paid media campaigns. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in entertainment or comic book marketing with a focus on growth marketing campaigns and is comfortable being hands-on in a lean environment.

It’s an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys building brands, thrives in highly collaborative environments, and is passionate about entertainment, fandom, and culture.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and launch tentpole marketing campaigns designed to attract new readers or re-engage lapsed ones. Oversee all aspects of campaign development, working in conjunction with internal teams and agencies to bring new programs to market.

  • Oversee performance marketing agency to manage ongoing paid media spend. Develop hypotheses, design programs and optimize campaigns with an ongoing focus on improving customer acquisition metrics.

  • Track and report campaign performance on an ongoing basis—including the impact on platform metrics as well as brand health indicators such as awareness, consideration, preference, and perception.

  • Explore new channels and partnerships to unlock new audiences and distribution opportunities.

  • Own the ongoing marketing calendar – tracking internal and partner schedules to ensure coordinated promotions across all key moments.

Required Qualifications
  • 7+ years of marketing experience, ideally within entertainment or fandom-driven industries. Experience in the comics industry strongly preferred.

  • Strong understanding of growth marketing, with proven experience developing and optimizing performance marketing campaigns.

  • Experience marketing to fandom-driven audiences and a strong understanding of fan communities and fan behavior.

  • Experience working within a global organization, with a demonstrated ability to drive cross-functional collaboration and influence teams without direct authority.

  • Experience collaborating with internal creative teams and external agencies to develop impactful creative campaigns.

  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to leverage consumer research, brand tracking, and campaign performance data to inform strategy.

  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills, with the ability to independently manage multiple initiatives, budgets, timelines, and stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills.

  • Highly adaptable and comfortable navigating ambiguity, shifting priorities, and a dynamic work environment.

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Korean is a plus.
