What is a freelance coder?

A freelance coder is an independent professional who offers programming and software development services to clients on a contract or project basis, rather than working as a full-time employee for a single company. They may work on various tasks such as building websites, developing applications, or fixing code issues for multiple clients at a time. Freelance coders have the flexibility to choose their projects, set their own rates, and often work remotely. They are responsible for managing their own business operations, including finding clients, negotiating contracts, and handling taxes.

What does a freelance coder do?

A freelance coder works on software programming projects on a contract basis. Specific job duties depend on the needs of your client, but general job duties include developing software, applications, or computer systems to meet your client’s specifications. You may also be responsible for testing the software or debugging and updating existing applications. The programming languages they use vary, but coders typically specialize in one area. For example, web coders know HMTL and JavaScript, mobile coders use Java, and database freelancers use SQL. Some projects may require collaboration with other developers. Freelance coders work on a short- or long-term contract basis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Coder, you need strong programming skills in relevant languages, a solid understanding of software development principles, and a portfolio showcasing completed projects. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, project management tools, and sometimes certifications in specific technologies are valuable. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are critical soft skills for managing client relationships and meeting deadlines. These skills ensure freelancers can deliver high-quality solutions independently, maintain client satisfaction, and build a sustainable career.

How do freelance coders typically manage communication and collaboration with clients and other team members?

Freelance coders often work remotely, so clear and consistent communication is crucial. They usually use tools like Slack, Trello, or email to keep clients updated, track project progress, and share files. Many projects require freelancers to join virtual meetings or use version control platforms like GitHub for collaboration. Building strong relationships and setting clear expectations early on helps ensure smooth teamwork, even when working independently.

Job description

We're seeking a Growth & Signature Packaging Strategy Contractor to support our Consumer Video/Streaming business. This ongoing, full-time contract role sits at the intersection of consumer packaging strategy, pricing, and content decisioning - driving high-stakes business cases for Stream while bringing deep pay-TV, streaming, or telco expertise to the table. You'll translate quantitative signals into decision-ready recommendations, own Add/Drop decisioning as a core responsibility, and stress-test every recommendation with sharp analytical rigor and compelling storytelling. If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you - apply today!
  • Pay rate:$60/hr on w2 to $68/hr on w2
  • Remote role

Responsibilities:
  • Support/lead consumer packaging and pricing business cases end-to-end for Stream - framing hypotheses, sizing the addressable market, weighing cannibalization risk against signature packages, and proposing low-investment test paths before a full build
  • Own Add/Drop decisioning as a core, recurring responsibility - evaluating which networks and content to add or remove based on cost, engagement, churn risk, and competitive positioning, and translating programming economics into clear consumer-packaging trade-offs
  • Direct and interpret quantitative work (market sizing, competitive pricing, customer surveys, UX and call-center signals, churn analysis) into a coherent, decision-ready point of view
  • Bring required pay-TV, streaming, or telco expertise - understanding how packages are built and marketed, how carriage and content economics work, and where contract or pricing "gray areas" create new opportunities rather than fixed constraints
  • Stress-test every recommendation against a credible opposing view and challenge stakeholder assumptions (while welcoming the same), backed by strong written and verbal storytelling

Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced Excel/spreadsheet modeling (market sizing, pricing scenarios, sensitivity analysis)
  • SQL literacy - able to query, pull, and validate data independently (even if not writing complex production code)
  • Data interpretation and visualization (reading dashboards; building clear charts/tables in Tableau, Power BI, or similar)
  • Comfort with survey, UX, and call-center data sources and basic segmentation logic
  • Strong slide/narrative tooling (PowerPoint) to package analysis into decision-ready recommendations
  • Analytically fluent - hands-on coding is not required, but strong quantitative interpretation skills are essential

Nice to Have:
  • Databricks familiarity (notebooks, navigating a lakehouse environment)
  • Exposure to AI/LLM agents or automation for competitive and market monitoring
  • Python or R for lightweight analysis
  • Familiarity with subscriber/churn analytics or media-measurement data (Nielsen, Comscore, or internal viewership feeds)
  • Basic understanding of A/B or in-market test design

If you meet the required qualifications and are interested in this role, please apply today.
