Freelance Audio Visual Programmer information

What is the difference between Freelance Audio Visual Programmer vs AV Technician?

AspectFreelance Audio Visual ProgrammerAV Technician
CredentialsTechnical certifications, programming skillsTechnical certifications, equipment operation
Work EnvironmentProject-based, client sites, eventsInstallation, maintenance, on-site support
Industry UsageEvent production, corporate AV projectsVenue setup, equipment troubleshooting

While both roles work within the AV industry, a Freelance Audio Visual Programmer primarily focuses on designing and programming AV systems for events and installations, often working independently. An AV Technician handles the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of AV equipment on-site. What is a freelance audio visual programmer?

Freelance audio visual (AV) programmers are independent professionals who design, develop, and implement software solutions that control AV systems such as lighting, sound, video, and conferencing equipment. They work on a contract basis for various clients, tailoring AV system automation and integration to specific project needs. Their expertise often includes programming languages used in AV technology, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring seamless operation across devices and platforms. Freelance AV programmers typically work with commercial spaces, educational institutions, event venues, and corporate environments.

How do freelance audio visual programmers typically collaborate with clients and on-site teams during project installations?

Freelance audio visual programmers often work closely with both clients and on-site technical teams throughout the project lifecycle. Communication is key—they may attend planning meetings, provide remote programming support, and sometimes travel to installation sites for system testing and troubleshooting. Clear documentation and responsiveness help ensure that system requirements are met and integration with other technologies goes smoothly. Building strong professional relationships with integrators, project managers, and end users is essential for successful project delivery and future opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance audio visual programmer?

To thrive as a Freelance Audio Visual Programmer, you need proficiency in AV system design, programming languages like Crestron, AMX, or Extron, and a solid understanding of signal flow and integration. Familiarity with control systems, touch panel interfaces, and certifications such as Crestron Certified Programmer or similar are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective client communication set top professionals apart. These skills ensure the seamless implementation and maintenance of complex AV solutions, meeting client needs efficiently and reliably.

Job description

Project Designer, Audiovisual Location: Toronto, Ontario Salary: $80,000 to $120,000 annually Our client is an established Canadian building systems consulting firm with a strong reputation for delivering complex design projects across the country. Their work supports major public, institutional, commercial, transportation, education, healthcare, and mixed use environments. They are currently looking for an experienced Audiovisual Project Designer to join their Toronto team.

This is a strong opportunity for someone who enjoys the technical side of AV design but also wants to be involved in client conversations, project coordination, and the full delivery process. The successful candidate will help lead audiovisual system design from early planning through construction documentation and site support. The role requires someone who can work closely with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, AV integrators, and internal design teams.

You will help define user requirements, develop coordinated AV solutions, manage design deliverables, and ensure the final design is practical, coordinated, buildable, and aligned with the project's scope, schedule, and budget. What you will be doing Lead client and user discussions to understand audiovisual requirements and convert them into clear, coordinated design solutions. Manage AV system design through concept development, detailed design, tender documentation, and construction support.

Prepare coordinated drawings, details, specifications, and tender packages. Work with architects, interior designers, engineers, and other consultants to properly integrate AV equipment into the building design. Coordinate with AV integrators, general contractors, suppliers, and trades to resolve construction and coordination issues.

Review design requirements against project scope, budget, schedule, and constructability. Support project documentation, including site instructions, change notices, and related construction administration items. Build productive working relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, suppliers, manufacturers, and internal team members.

Support and mentor junior members of the audiovisual team. What we are looking for Five or more years of experience in audiovisual design, electrical design, building systems, AV integration, or a related technical field. Experience working on building design, consulting engineering, construction, or AV integration projects.

Strong understanding of audiovisual systems and industry standards. Familiarity with AVIXA standards would be considered an asset. Experience with Microsoft Office, CAD, Revit, and project management tools.

P.Eng., CTS, or CTS D certification would be considered an asset. Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, clients, and technical priorities. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teams

A practical, detail focused approach to design coordination and problem solving. Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently when required. A sense of urgency and the ability to keep projects moving while maintaining quality.

Why this opportunity is worth considering This role offers the chance to work with a respected Canadian consulting firm on complex building projects with meaningful technical scope. The company offers a collaborative team environment, strong project exposure, and the opportunity to build depth in a specialized and growing area of building systems design. The package includes: Competitive salary Flexible work hours Comprehensive group health benefits Health spending account Group retirement savings plan Employer supported retirement contributions Employee ownership or long term incentive participation Purchase time off program Transit support Company events and team activities Compensation Transparency The expected compensation range for this role is $80,000 to $120,000 annually, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, certifications, and overall fit for the position.
