What is a freelance architectural visualization?

A Freelance Architectural Visualization job involves creating high-quality 3D renderings, animations, and virtual walkthroughs of architectural designs for clients such as architects, designers, and real estate developers. Freelancers in this field use software like 3ds Max, Blender, or SketchUp to produce realistic visual representations of buildings before they are constructed. Their work helps clients visualize design concepts, refine details, and market properties effectively. Since it is a freelance job, professionals work on a project-by-project basis, managing their clients, schedules, and pricing independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in freelance architectural visualization?

To thrive as a Freelance Architectural Visualization professional, you need advanced skills in 3D modeling, rendering, and architectural design, often backed by a degree in architecture, design, or a related field. Mastery of industry-standard software such as Autodesk 3ds Max, SketchUp, V-Ray, and Adobe Creative Suite is crucial, and certifications in these tools can enhance your credibility. Strong communication, client management, and time-management skills set exceptional freelancers apart in coordinating with architects, designers, and clients. These abilities are essential for delivering high-quality, visually compelling work on schedule and maintaining lasting client relationships.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance architectural visualization professionals?

Freelance architectural visualization professionals often face challenges such as managing multiple projects with varying deadlines, keeping up with rapidly evolving technology and design trends, and effectively communicating with clients who may have limited design knowledge. Building a steady client base and handling the business aspects—like contracts, invoicing, and marketing—can also be demanding, especially when starting out. Additionally, freelancers must be proactive in networking and continuously updating their portfolios to showcase the latest and best work. Overcoming these challenges requires strong organizational skills, adaptability, and a commitment to ongoing learning, but it also provides flexibility and the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects.

Job description

Company Overview

David Hotson_Architect is an architectural practice focused on the treatment of architectural space as an artistic medium, shaped to respond to the moving point of view.

Recently completed projects include the Saint Sarkis Armenian Church, which received the AIANY Honor Award in April 2024. The church was described by Pulitzer Prize-winning architectural critic Mark Lamster as “…..the most aesthetically remarkable and emotionally moving work of architecture produced in North Texas in a generation.” In December 2025, our SkyHouse penthouse was selected by Interior Design Magazine as the single most impactful apartment of the past twenty years.

We are seeking one or more highly motivated designers to participate in the ongoing development of our design direction. A successful candidate will have a deep interest in architectural space, facility with rigorous and complex 3D spatial modeling, and expertise in cutting-edge architectural visualization. This is an opportunity to shape the conceptual trajectory of an established practice with a long record of high-quality work.

Responsibilities and Qualifications
  • Our spatial design direction requires advanced 3D modeling capabilities, with a heavy emphasis on complex and double-curved geometry, the manipulation of sightlines, rapid iteration, and fluid interplay between CAD, rendering, animation, and 3D-printed models. The candidate will work closely with design leadership. The ability to maintain focus and work efficiently in a motivated, self-directed work ethic will be prerequisites for success.
  • Modeling: Demonstrated advanced proficiency in Rhino is an absolute requirement for the position. Experience with Grasshopper is desired, both in the use of standard components for parametric design and in the development of novel scripts for automation and standardization of modeling tasks.
  • Visualization: Our focus on space and its experience in vision is best demonstrated to clients and patrons through animated visualization in which the point of view translates in space. For this reason, our studio places emphasis on photorealistic visualization, with a focus on rendered animations. The candidate must demonstrate experience in producing high-quality renderings; moreover, they should have a deep interest in architectural visualization as a component of practice and be interested in participating in contemporary visualization processes. Proficiency in either Unreal Engine, Lumion, and V-Ray, or equivalent rendering packages is required (preference will be given to Unreal Engine). Familiarity with Adobe Premiere or equivalent video-editing software is desired. Familiarity with generative AI tools is a plus.
  • Conceptualization: The ideal candidate will demonstrate interest and capability in participating in high-level design discussions and explorations of architectural space; they will be expected to contribute original design iterations and ideas while also carefully following design programs laid out by team leads.
  • 3D Printing: We use 3D-printed models as both internal design development tools and external presentation. The candidate should demonstrate advanced proficiency at producing complex, multi-part 3D-printed models from complex digital models.
  • Other Assets: Familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite, in particular InDesign and Photoshop, is desired.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Revit is a significant plus.
  • Experience in construction, construction document production, and construction detailing is a plus.
Growth and Adaptability

Candidates should show flexibility, curiosity, and willingness to experiment, take leadership in developing best practices, and continually seek new approaches to augment and bolster our ongoing architectural trajectory. An ideal candidate will be excited to grow into a leadership role and take ownership of a broad sector of the practice’s creative output. Roles may evolve from moment to moment according to the rhythms of project timelines.

Working Arrangements

Flexible work arrangements, including part-time, freelance, and remote work, are open for consideration.
