What is freelance animation script writing?

Freelance animation script writing involves creating scripts specifically for animated projects, such as TV shows, films, commercials, or web series, while working independently or on a contract basis. Script writers develop storylines, dialogue, and scene directions tailored for animation, often collaborating with animators, directors, and producers. Unlike staff writers who are employed full-time by studios, freelance script writers manage their own clients and projects, offering flexibility and a diverse range of work opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance animation script writer?

To thrive as a Freelance Animation Script Writer, you need strong storytelling abilities, screenwriting expertise, and a solid grasp of animation formats and genres, often supported by a portfolio of previous work or scriptwriting courses. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Final Draft, Celtx, and collaborative platforms is typically required. Exceptional creativity, adaptability, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients and animation teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure engaging scripts that fit project goals, smooth collaboration, and successful delivery of animated content.

What are some common challenges freelance animation script writers face when working with animation studios or independent creators?

Freelance animation script writers often encounter challenges such as adapting their writing style to match a studio’s visual storytelling approach and managing feedback from multiple stakeholders, including directors, animators, and producers. Balancing creative vision with technical constraints, such as animation budgets and time limitations, can also be a hurdle. Additionally, freelancers must be proactive in communicating and clarifying project expectations, as remote work and varying workflows can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or revisions. Building strong relationships with creative teams and maintaining flexibility are key to overcoming these challenges.

Job description

At AKQA (part of WPP), we believe in the imaginative application of art and science to create beautiful ideas, products and services. With an entrepreneurial and collaborative approach, we design adaptive digital services and applications that capture the imagination, delivering impressive returns for our clients.

Creatives at AKQA apply artistry and craftsmanship to strategic insight to create and bring to life beautiful ideas that move the world. Skilled storytellers and conceptors, they work in a multidisciplinary environment to develop labors of love that delight customers and deliver results for clients. Designers play essential roles in the strategy, conception, and design of beautiful ideas, products and services, bringing exceptional creative thought and craft output from brief to end user.

We are seeking an experienced Freelance Senior Designer to support a nationally recognized financial brand celebrated for its bold creative ambitions and culturally resonant work. In this role you will be designing static and animated banner ads for a social card campaign, bringing strong creative judgment and visual craft to work that will reach a wide audience. You are a conceptual, design-forward creative who can also execute at a production level when the work calls for it, but this is not a production design role. Senior creative thinking and craft are what matter most here. This is a remote freelance role from August 17 through October 16, 2026.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Design static and animated banner ads across a range of sizes and formats for a social card campaign, bringing both creative ambition and technical precision to every deliverable
  • Bring strong conceptual and visual thinking to the work, ensuring each execution is purposeful, on-brand, and visually compelling
  • Execute animation with a confident, considered hand, understanding how motion serves communication without overwhelming it
  • Maintain the quality and consistency of assets across a campaign system, adapting designs thoughtfully across formats and placements
  • Execute production-level work when required, with the craft and attention to detail that ensures every file is delivery-ready
  • Collaborate closely with creative leads, strategists, and other team members to ensure the work is aligned to brief and client expectations

QUALITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS

  • A compelling portfolio demonstrating strong creative and design craft across digital advertising, social, and campaign work
  • Confident with both static and motion design, with a clear point of view on how animation elevates an idea rather than decorates it
  • A senior creative sensibility; you bring concept and craft in equal measure and know the difference between designing and producing
  • Comfortable working efficiently across a campaign system with multiple formats and asset variations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Collaborative, receptive to feedback, and motivated by delivering work that performs as well as it looks

Location & Commitment

  • Remote (United States only); must be available during core business hours, U.S. Eastern Time
  • August 17, 2026 through October 16, 2026
  • 40 hours/week
  • Expected weekly compensation: $2,600 to $3,000
