Freelance Algorithmic Trading Programmer information

What is a freelance algorithmic trading programmer?

A Freelance Algorithmic Trading Programmer is a professional who designs, develops, and implements trading algorithms for financial markets on a contract or project basis. They use programming languages like Python, C++, or Java to create automated systems that can execute trades based on predefined strategies without human intervention. These programmers often collaborate with traders, investment firms, or hedge funds to build, backtest, and optimize trading algorithms that aim to maximize profits and minimize risks. Working independently, they may also advise clients on best practices, maintain trading infrastructure, and ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations.

What are some typical challenges freelance algorithmic trading programmers face when working with clients?

Freelance algorithmic trading programmers often encounter challenges such as aligning with clients' diverse strategies, accommodating rapid changes in trading requirements, and ensuring robust backtesting for different market conditions. Effective communication is key, as clients may have varying levels of technical understanding and expectations regarding performance and risk management. Additionally, freelancers must stay updated on compliance standards and platform-specific APIs, which can differ significantly between projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance algorithmic trading programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Algorithmic Trading Programmer, you need strong programming skills (often in Python, C++, or Java), a solid understanding of financial markets, and experience with quantitative analysis. Familiarity with trading platforms (like MetaTrader, NinjaTrader, or Interactive Brokers API), backtesting frameworks, and relevant certifications such as CFA or CQF can be highly valuable. Outstanding problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication with clients set top performers apart. These skills are crucial for building reliable, profitable trading algorithms and translating complex financial requirements into robust, real-world solutions.

What is the difference between Freelance Algorithmic Trading Programmer vs Quantitative Analyst?

Job description

Welcome to Warner Bros. Discovery... the stuff dreams are made of.

Who We Are...

When we say, "the stuff dreams are made of," we're not just referring to the world of wizards, dragons and superheroes, or even to the wonders of Planet Earth. Behind WBD's vast portfolio of iconic content and beloved brands, are the storytellers bringing our characters to life, the creators bringing them to your living rooms and the dreamers creating what's next...

From brilliant creatives, to technology trailblazers, across the globe, WBD offers career defining opportunities, thoughtfully curated benefits, and the tools to explore and grow into your best selves. Here you are supported, here you are celebrated, here you can thrive.

Who We Are

At WBD we seek to ignite people's curiosity to engage, entertain, and enlighten the world around them through amazing viewing experiences. From brilliant creatives to technology trailblazers across the globe, we plan, design and build products for connected TVs, web, mobile phones, tablets, and consoles for a large customer base across the world.

The Labs organization is the experimentation engine behind WBD's streaming products. We empower teams across the company to make fast, confident, data-driven decisions through modern experimentation capabilities, intelligent optimization tools, and robust insights. Our mission is simple: help every team learn faster, iterate smarter, and deliver better experiences to customers.

Your New Role...

We're looking for a Staff Product Manager to lead the future of experimentation across WBD's streaming ecosystem. In this role, you will define the long-term strategy for experimentation, own the roadmap for our experimentation platform, and partner with leaders across product, engineering, and data science to unlock high-quality decision-making at scale.

You will enable hundreds of PMs and engineers across teams, to experiment with minimal friction, interpret results with confidence, and optimize product experiences that reach tens of millions of viewers. As a Staff PM, you will shape company-wide mechanisms, raise the bar for experimentation quality, mentor PMs across the org, and serve as the go-to expert when tests yield ambiguous or conflicting outcomes.

This is a rare opportunity to define foundational capabilities for one of the largest streaming platforms in the world.

Your Role Accountabilities...

  • Develop and articulate a multi-year strategy for experimentation, optimization, and insights across WBD's streaming portfolio.

  • Own the roadmap for the experimentation platform, prioritizing foundational features such as experiment setup workflows, guardrail metrics, automated analytics, and multivariate testing.

  • Drive platform enhancements that reduce friction, increase experiment reliability, and scale with the complexity of our products.

  • Expand experimentation coverage across new product surfaces, customer journeys, international markets, and emerging experience areas.

  • Establish and evolve company-wide standards for A/B testing methodology, analysis, and communication.

  • Define mechanisms (e.g., review forums, playbooks, quality gates) that ensure experimentation rigor across the organization.

  • Provide thought leadership and hands-on guidance when experiments yield ambiguous, contradictory, or hard-to-interpret results.

  • Partner with teams to design high-quality tests and ensure strong measurement practices.

  • Support teams facing challenges in experiment execution, evaluation, or integration with platform services.

  • Define how experimentation integrates with broader product, data, and platform roadmaps.

  • Build tooling that empowers teams to run, interpret, and act on experiments independently.

  • Partner with data science to improve automated analysis pipelines, metric consistency, and test validity.

  • Influence senior leaders and partner teams across engineering, product, analytics, design, and marketing on how to use experimentation to prioritize initiatives and investment opportunities

  • Drive alignment on experimentation strategy, frameworks, and KPI definitions.

  • Mentor PMs and engineers, raising the maturity of experimentation and product thinking across WBD.

Skills / Experience

  • 8+ years of product management experience, with significant ownership of experimentation, optimization, or data-driven decision-making platforms.

  • Deep understanding of A/B testing methodologies, statistical analysis, metric design, and experimentation frameworks.

  • Experience collaborating closely with analytics and data science teams to build or evolve automated analysis capabilities.

  • Strong technical fluency - able to engage with engineering on assignment systems, data pipelines, algorithmic trade-offs, or platform architecture.

  • Proven experience driving cross-functional programs, building org-wide mechanisms, and influencing at executive levels.

  • Systems thinker who connects algorithmic performance, customer behavior, and business outcomes.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communicator with the ability to simplify complex concepts for diverse audiences.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field (preferred but not required).

Why join us

At WBD, we're reinventing the future of streaming, and experimentation is at the heart of that innovation. In Labs, you'll help shape the decision-making engine behind products used by millions of customers worldwide. If you're passionate about building systems that accelerate learning, improve product quality, and drive meaningful customer impact, we'd love to meet you.

How We Get Things Done...

This last bit is probably the most important! Here at WBD, our guiding principles are the core values by which we operate and are central to how we get things done. You can find them at www.wbd.com/guiding-principles/ along with some insights from the team on what they mean and how they show up in their day to day. We hope they resonate with you and look forward to discussing them during your interview.
