Description

INTERA is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Air Quality Engineer/Scientist to join our growing Air Quality Services team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to complex, high-impact air quality permitting, compliance, and regulatory strategy projects while working alongside industry-leading experts and multidisciplinary teams. In this role, you will partner closely with INTERA's Director of Air Quality to develop innovative solutions for clients across a diverse range of industries. You will apply your technical expertise to emissions evaluations, air permitting, regulatory compliance, and environmental planning while helping clients navigate evolving regulatory requirements and achieve their business objectives.


Beyond technical project work, this position offers significant opportunities to grow as an air quality services professional through hands-on experience with permitting strategy, emissions analyses, regulatory interpretation, compliance planning, and client-facing technical support. Successful candidates will help deliver practical, defensible air quality solutions while supporting project management, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to the continued growth of INTERA's air quality practice. We are looking for a proactive, solutions-oriented professional who combines strong technical judgment with clear communication skills and is eager to take on increasing responsibility in air quality consulting. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare application packages for New Source Review (NSR) and Title V permits
  • Prepare emission calculations for a variety of technical applications and site types
  • Develop and prepare emission inventories for permitting, regulatory reporting, and ongoing compliance
  • Assist in the development of recordkeeping tools
  • Perform Best Available Control Technology (BACT) analyses
  • Perform local, state, and federal regulatory applicability analyses
  • Review work product prepared by junior staff
  • Perform other duties as necessary per the direction of management

Required Qualifications

  • 5-8 years of experience in air quality permitting and compliance projects
  • A BS in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
  • Enhanced understanding of relevant regulations to your tasks, projects, and overall responsibilities
  • Strong technical competencies related to relevant scopes of work
  • Ability to mentor and train junior staff
  • Proficient in time management
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to receive and give direction and constructive feedback in a positive manner
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment in a professional manner
  • Ability to shepherd and cultivate client relationships through desirable outcomes on projects and actively assist with business development

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of project scoping and proposal preparation experience
  • 2-3 years of project experience in air quality dispersion modeling using approved regulatory models (i.e., AERMOD, ISC-PRIME, etc.)
  • Proficiency in other relevant software tools (i.e., SCREEN3, PROMAX, etc.)
  • Professional Engineer or an E.I.T. license with the goal of obtaining a P.E. license
  • Masters or Ph.D. in Civil, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering, Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, or related field
