Free Internship information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a free intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Free Intern, you should have a willingness to learn, basic knowledge relevant to the industry, and strong organizational skills, often supported by ongoing education or recent graduation. Familiarity with productivity tools like Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, or industry-specific software is commonly expected. Proactive communication, adaptability, and a positive attitude help interns stand out and make the most of their experience. These skills and qualities are important as they enable interns to contribute effectively, learn quickly, and build valuable professional relationships.

What is a free internship?

Free internships are positions where individuals, typically students or recent graduates, work for an organization without receiving monetary compensation. These internships are designed to provide practical experience, skill development, and networking opportunities in a chosen field. While free internships can help build a resume and gain hands-on experience, it's important to ensure that the work aligns with your career goals and that you are still receiving valuable training or mentorship. Some industries offer more unpaid internships than others, but it's crucial to be aware of labor laws regarding unpaid work in your country.

Do free internships still exist?

Yes, free internships still exist in various industries, especially for students and entry-level candidates seeking experience. However, many organizations now offer paid internships to comply with labor laws and attract talent, so the availability of free internships varies by company and field.

What are some common challenges faced during a free internship, and how can I make the most of the experience?

Free internships can sometimes present challenges such as limited access to structured training, fewer financial resources, and the need to balance unpaid work with other commitments. To make the most of the experience, it's important to proactively seek feedback, volunteer for diverse tasks, and network with professionals in the organization. Demonstrating initiative and eagerness to learn can help you gain valuable skills and potentially open doors for future paid opportunities or recommendations.

Job description

Christians for Biblical Equality (CBE) is a nonprofit organization of Christian men and women who believe that the Bible, properly interpreted, teaches the fundamental equality of men and women of all ethnic groups, all economic classes, and all age groups, based on the teachings of Scriptures such as Galatians 3:28: "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (NIV 2011). CBE promotes biblical justice and community by educating Christians that the Bible calls women and men to share authority equally in service and leadership in the home, church, and world. CBE's mission is to eliminate the power imbalance between men and women resulting from theological patriarchy.

CBE offers year-round student internships for graduate and undergraduate students at our office in Minneapolis, or working remotely. Students work with CBE staff to oversee ministry projects in their fields, and specific criteria required by colleges are considered and incorporated into intern job descriptions. Each intern job description is written to meet the needs of the student and CBE, and intern schedules are established between students and their CBE staff supervisor.

Please let us know the timeframe you are seeking for an internship, as well as any class/credit requirements you are seeking to fulfill. Most internships during the school year run from 150 - 180 hours per semester, and take place over the course of 10-12 weeks. During the summer, internships may be scheduled for up to 480 hours and up to 12 weeks. We may be able to consider an internship of 120 hours in as few as 3-4 weeks.

Consider becoming a CBE intern and gain credit at your school. Internships are open to anyone, whether you are enrolled in an academic program or not. Internship applications are accepted for spring, summer, fall and J-term / Inter-term.
