What is framing work?

Framing work is the process of constructing the structural framework of a building, typically using wood, steel, or engineered lumber. Framers build the skeleton of walls, floors, and roofs, providing support for the entire structure. This stage is crucial as it determines the shape, strength, and stability of the building. Framing workers use blueprints to measure, cut, and assemble framing components, ensuring the structure meets building codes and safety standards.

What are some common challenges faced by framing workers on construction sites, and how can they be managed?

Framing workers often encounter challenges such as working in varying weather conditions, adhering to tight project deadlines, and ensuring precise measurements for structural integrity. Managing these challenges involves strong teamwork, effective communication with supervisors and other trades, and strict adherence to safety protocols. Staying organized, using proper tools, and continually updating skills can also help framing workers maintain quality and efficiency on the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Framing Work, and why are they important?

To thrive in Framing Work, you need strong skills in measuring, cutting, and assembling building materials, typically supported by experience or vocational training in carpentry. Familiarity with power tools, hand tools, and construction blueprints is essential, and OSHA safety certification is often preferred. Attention to detail, teamwork, and problem-solving are key soft skills for ensuring the structural integrity and efficiency of projects. These skills and qualities are crucial for building safe, precise, and durable frameworks that form the backbone of construction projects.

Job description

Framing Carpenter Job Description

We're looking for an experienced Framing Carpenter to join our passionate and creative team in Farmington, New York. We specialize in building and installing panelized enclosure systems using industry-leading, high-performance materials. If you're a self-starter with a strong team-oriented attitude, you'll be a great fit for helping us pre-fabricate and install high-performance wall, roof, and floor panels.

The Role

You'll primarily focus on framing work, spending most of your time in our shop constructing panels using both hand tools and semi-automated equipment. You will also travel to job sites to help with installation. Our standard work schedule is 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday, with optional Fridays for overtime. Projects are typically within a 4–6-hour driving radius, so travel is required, but we offer a generous compensation increase for out-of-town installation work.

Required Experience

  • 2+ years of framing or carpentry experience.

  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and shop drawings.

  • Excellent math and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail.

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License with a clean driving record.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in high-performance home building, Passive House construction, or high-efficiency enclosure systems.

  • A general understanding of high-performance building envelopes and construction methods.

About Us

This is a full-time, year-round position with a flexible schedule and great benefits, including 70% company-paid medical, paid holidays and PTO, a matching 401k, and dental and vision coverage. As a 100% Employee-Owned (ESOP) company, we offer profit-sharing when appropriate.
