What is a fracture liaison service?

A Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) is a coordinated healthcare program designed to identify, assess, and manage patients who have suffered a fragility fracture, typically due to osteoporosis. The main goal of an FLS is to prevent future fractures by ensuring that patients receive appropriate bone health assessment, treatment, and follow-up care. This multidisciplinary approach often involves physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals working together to improve outcomes for individuals at risk of repeat fractures. By systematically addressing bone health after an initial fracture, FLS programs help reduce the risk of subsequent injuries and improve quality of life for patients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fracture liaison service coordinator?

To thrive as a Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) Coordinator, you need a clinical background in nursing, physiotherapy, or a related health profession, along with knowledge of osteoporosis and fracture prevention. Familiarity with patient management systems, bone density scanning equipment, and relevant certifications in osteoporosis care is typically required. Exceptional organizational, communication, and patient education skills help build trust and ensure effective care coordination across multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for improving patient outcomes, reducing secondary fractures, and streamlining care pathways.

What are the main challenges faced by fracture liaison service coordinators in ensuring patient follow-up and adherence to treatment plans?

Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) coordinators often encounter challenges in tracking patients after discharge, motivating them to attend follow-up appointments, and ensuring compliance with prescribed osteoporosis treatments. Many patients may lack understanding of their fracture risk or the importance of ongoing management, making education a key part of the role. Coordinators must also collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams—such as orthopedic surgeons, primary care physicians, and endocrinologists—to streamline care and maintain consistent communication, which can be complex in larger healthcare settings.
