Fractional Software information

What is a fractional software engineer?

A Fractional Software Engineer is a seasoned software professional who works with companies on a part-time, contract, or as-needed basis instead of as a full-time employee. These engineers often provide their expertise to multiple organizations simultaneously, helping with software development, architecture, and project management. Businesses hire fractional engineers to access specialized skills without the commitment or cost of a full-time hire. This approach is especially popular among startups and small businesses that need expert input but have limited resources.

What is the difference between Fractional Software vs Software Developer?

AspectFractional SoftwareSoftware Developer
CredentialsTypically no specific certifications required; focus on experienceOften holds degrees or certifications in computer science or related fields

Employer & Industry UsageUsed by startups, SMBs, and consulting firms for flexible expertiseEmployed by companies to develop software solutions in various industries
Search & Comparison IntentSeeking flexible, part-time software expertiseLooking for full-time or permanent software development roles

In summary, Fractional Software professionals provide flexible, project-based software expertise without the need for full-time employment, whereas Software Developers typically work as full-time employees with a focus on ongoing software development within a company.

How does a fractional software developer typically integrate with client teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously?

As a fractional software developer, you'll often work with several clients at once, each with unique workflows, tools, and communication styles. Successful integration involves quickly understanding each project's requirements and building rapport with in-house teams, often through regular check-ins and clear documentation. Time management and adaptability are key, as you'll need to balance shifting priorities and deliverables across different organizations. Most fractional developers leverage collaborative tools like Slack, Jira, or Trello to stay organized and ensure seamless communication. This role offers exposure to diverse industries and technologies, fostering rapid skill growth and professional networking.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fractional software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fractional Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, experience with software development lifecycles, and a proven track record in delivering projects, often supported by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with collaboration tools like Git, project management systems such as Jira, and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure is typically required. Outstanding communication, self-motivation, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for managing multiple clients and shifting priorities. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering high-quality solutions efficiently in a flexible, project-based role.

Job description

About Beacon Software
Beacon Software is a permanent capital holding company which acquires and grows essential businesses. We are a profitable Series C firm that combines great technologists, operators and M&A professionals to accelerate the scale of the ambition of the dozens of businesses we own and operate. We are supported by capital from tier-1 venture capital, crossover, and endowment investors as well as the founders of the leading technology companies from the past decade.
We are growing our team in Toronto, San Francisco, and New York. Apply below.
You'll be joining Beacon's Acceleration team: a cross-functional group of Product Managers, Engineers, Designers, GTM experts, and Data Scientists. We work closely with portfolio companies to solve problems, create and implement playbooks, and build new features and products.
About the Role
Beacon Software buys businesses. You get to grow them.
Specifically, you'll design and run go-to-market experiments for a pod of 3-4 companies we've acquired in a particular industry (education, industrials, parks & rec, etc).
This can take any shape: you might launch ads, cross-sell into other portfolio companies, game plan a conference, scrape high-intent lead lists, write copy, or vibe-code a dashboard.
To put it another way, you'll be a fractional head of growth, with an eye towards systems and playbooks that generalize across portfolio companies.
We're looking for an animal who can go into a business, ask the right questions with little context, launch experiments, and drive revenue.
Basically, we're looking for The Wolf, but for growth.
Why would you want this role?
  • Get a first-person view into the world of private equity, rollups, and AI.
  • Access proprietary learnings about vertical SaaS businesses in a variety of industries.
  • Work with a team of former YC founders, growth leaders, and execs at Silicon Valley's fastest-growing companies (Instacart, AngelList, Retool, and more).
  • Have loads of control and autonomy over what you work on.
  • Be artsy AND sciencey.
    • Like writing copy and brainstorming video ideas? You get to do that.
    • Like reading investment memos and deeply understanding businesses? You get to do that, too.
  • Ample LLM token budget.
  • Meaningful equity in a hyperscaler that's already profitable.

Your Future Teammates
  • Asher: Former cofounder of Demand Curve (YC S19). Has grown multiple startups to millions in annual revenue.
  • Safwaan: Former EIR & investor at Founders Inc., former Chief of Staff to a well-known entrepreneur
  • Brent: Former growth @Together Software (YC S19) & Roadmunk, both companies acquired for 8-figure sums.

Key Responsibilities
  • Meet with your pod leader and portfolio company GMs, marrying product direction with user learnings to brainstorm growth experiments.
  • Prioritize, build, and launch experiments that meaningfully drive revenue.
  • Identify and optimize growth loops at portfolio companies.
  • Track and improve conversion at every major step of the marketing funnel.
  • Build systems (e.g., playbooks, Claude skills, mini-products) that less technical GMs and portfolio company employees can use to run GTM experiments themselves.
  • Hire other great growth people.

What We're Looking For
  • Former founders and growth marketers/GTM engineers with a track record of cracking growth channels and loops, ideally in B2B SaaS.
  • Strong growth fundamentals: prioritizing channels, breaking down funnels, developing ICPs, automating prospecting and leadgen, copywriting, CRO, etc.
  • Clear, concise writing.
  • Comfort saying no to the wrong priorities.
  • Enough vibe-coding chops to be dangerous, but not a man-with-a-hammer.
  • Software engineering or finance background is a plus, but not required.

Our Values at Beacon Software
  • Humility: We acknowledge that the path to getting to the right answer involves being wrong along the way. We have strong beliefs which are weakly held. We actively seek new ideas and believe we can learn from anyone at any time.
  • Honesty: We are truth seeking in our approach to business problems. Business is a repeat game and we believe that human relationships generate alpha. We understand that trust is earned over a lifetime and can be lost in an instant.
  • Hunger: We play to win. We hold ourselves to high standards and will not be outworked. We take pride in having a deep sense of responsibility to ourselves, each other, our partners, and our customers. We believe to whom much is given much is expected.
  • Horizon: We seek to build a generational software company. This will take decades. We manage our expectations and those of our partners to take advantage of the 8th wonder of the world - compounding growth.

How We Use AI in Our Hiring Process: To ensure transparency, we want candidates to know that Beacon Software uses Artificial Intelligence and AI-enabled tools to assist with screening, reviewing, organizing and highlighting profiles and applications that match the key requirements for each role.
AI does not make hiring decisions: Every application is reviewed by a member of our team, and all decisions throughout the process are made by humans. We use AI to support efficiency and consistency, not to replace human judgment. We are committed to a fair, thoughtful, and equitable experience for every candidate.
